(Writing post fight) That would work for boxing so long as a victorious McGregor stayed with prize fighting (boxing) and didn't return to the AMA (or whatever that nonsense is called) - A victorious McGregor returning to cage fighting exclusively could steal away an entire generation of fight fans.
An interesting question (we won't know the answer to) is whether a victorious McGregor could have brought cage fighting PPV revenues up to par with championship boxing. He could have moved his sport into the upper echelon of entertainment instead it will remain at the the ice hockey level; the Stanley Cup playoffs are on ESPN II and for its championship fights, cage fighting doesn't hold much more prestige.
You are right boxing gains nothing from a Mayweather victory (and boxing needs something to change; it needs a great heavyweight.)
