Why do boxers who were great refuse to retire and end up with so many losses?

First off I know the **** is funny, and it is, but you can't just reduce these guys to uber drivers, school teachers, and construction workers. As if Joe Smith was plucked randomly off a construction site or Jeff Horn walked straight out of a 4th grade algebra classroom and fighting Manny Pacquiao.

Smith was 22-1 with 19 KO's when he fought Bernard. And even with his recent loss he's still rated in the top ten of light heavies in the world per boxrec.

Horn is a former Olympian and was on the fringe of being a top ten welter (I think he was rated 11th) prior to the Pacquiao fight

And people have reduced Orlando Salido to a mere Uber driver when the guy in reality is a former two weight world champion.

Now yes -- it is still sad seeing former greats like Hopkins & Pacquiao lose to guys (although in reality Pacquiao still did not lose that fight) that they would have mopped the floor with in their primes? Sure. But let's not act like these dudes are literally random bums off the street...lol.

And as for the point of the thread, I think fighters always think they can recapture their glory days in a bottle for one last fight. These guys have been fighting their entire lives, too. So it has to be really, REALLY hard saying goodbye to that forever...even when they should.

I agree. Titles mean so much and not "fighter" per se, which is why Cotto should've pulled a Floyd move and ducked #4 Margarito and fought the champ, Cory Spinks for the JMW title. It would've been Cotto's 3rd weight division title.

When you are the 35 year old post-prime boxer who's got a bank account with ~$200k in it you aren't exactly set for life & when a mfer has spent the last 28 years focused on boxing what exactly is a guy to do? You aren't exactly setup to do much more than get some $12/hr manual labor/Walmart cashier type job so getting $100k per fight a couple times a year with some hopes of getting another $1M or more payday if you string along enough W's makes all the sense in the world I'd imagine.
That's why they should have invested money they made in boxing. Instead some boxers make it rain in strip clubs, rock gucci, LV, Prada then have to fight until they are 40.

Floyd & Foreman were smart tho. Unlike most

Boxers don't suck at money. Humans suck at money doe.

Most cats right now would be broke within 2 months if they lost their job tomorrow & didn't immediately find another one.

I think boxers stick around more due to how boxing works than anything else. Cuz if they were managing a Kinko's at 35 they'd be just more cash poor %-wise vs the money they've touched most likely.

Also Foreman wasn't great with money til he was in his late 30's, 40's & got a deal where he made like a quarter billion or more. And idk if Floyd is all that smart either with his ******** bets of $100,000+, spending $1M+ on clothes in the mall, his tax issues that pop up every couple years. These guys made more money than boxers made then one could say they were good managers of that money or were smart with how they earned money off of that money. If most boxers got to a point where they made a quarter bill its probably kinda hard to f#ck up THAT much with that much margin of error on growing broke.

Yeah cause all those loses at the end of Ray Robinson's and Ali's career really tarnished their legacy right?

The most common answer is money. The next answer is that it all they know how to do, they been doing it so long since childhood, it's their way of life. For someone like Roy though, I actually think he just enjoys himself win or lose now, so he may as well get paid for it.

prior to floyd, cats actually put their titles, pride, etc. on the line, and lived with the results win or lose...
