And yeah, he dropped Holyfield, but Holy was way older at that point, and **** happens. Going into that fight, Ruiz was just known as a hugger with no real HW pop.
I agree with you, Roy was great enough to make the chance of it happening minimal. But he definitely possessed the power needed if he'd have gotten the perfect opportunity. Whichever way you look at it, I still think it was a dangerous fight for Roy. He was a 34 year old LHW who'd fought almost 50 times. Personally, I don't think he gets enough credit for the win.

He could have beaten the likes of Evander, Byrd and Toney.

Roy had no business fighting any of the super heavyweights like Lewis and the Klitschkos, he could've been competitive against the 200-230 lbs guys, but that's about it.

Ruiz was so mediocre, and RJJ was still RJJ to the point where the fight was looked at as a cherry pick. Was the win still good, yeah. But not any people really thought it was a "dangerous" fight for him in the sense of actually thinking there was actually a good chance he'd lose.

I agree though, he should get more credit for being a natural LHW beating an actual HW.

                Yeah, Lewis ducked Ruiz.

Ruiz was mediocre but he was tough.

A number of people thought it was a dangerous fight, including Ron Borges, who was one of Roy's biggest critics over the years.

                  Roy wasn't a natural LHW.

You have to note that LHW was his 3rd weight class.

A former MW champ beating a top 10 HW with ease was very impressive.

Ruiz gave other top 10 HW's hard nights.

It was a boring fight, but only because Roy made it look so easy.

If it'd have been exciting like Toney-Jirov, he'd have gotten a lot more credit.

True , he was a world beater after his k.o loss to Tua in rnd 1 and his split decision win against Jimmy Thunder . That coward Lewis instead faced undefeated 6'7 Grant after a k.o win with Golota .

I think he could've gotten away with some fights at heavy, e.g. Holyfield & Byrd, however, I wish he would've gone for a CW title and called it a career straight after.
