...and this is the Joe Smith that "experts" would have you believe Stevenson was ducking!!!
Now if Ward had never fought and taken Barrera to school those same "experts" would be saying Ward is ducking Barrera!!!
Ward is a BAD man!!

Browne vs Barrera, as the eliminator for next mandatory challenger, makes the most sense.
Browne obviously missed out on some money, but putting that fight as the co-feature for the next big card to come to NYC (at Barclays or Nassau) doesn't leave Browne with missing out on too much money.
Daniel Jacobs, Danny Garcia (though likely wanting another fight in Philly), and Deontay Wilder (with taking his next fight to Alabama being possible) are all due for fights that could end up in NYC.

Guess I'm not surprised. Don't know if Smith just has no talent, or he just has the wrong trainer. Time for he and his manager to make some hard choices. Wouldn't mind seeing him go further along in the sport.

Joe Smith Jr vs Sean Monaghan, Nassau Coliseum, Independence day 2018
Neither guy took a hellacious beating, so there's no real need for an extra long layoff for either guy.
The key would be to get each guy two fights before April 2018 (Thomas Williams, Chad Dawson, Fonfara, Edwin Rodriguez, etc, guys in that second tier, should be looked at as options).
Hope that the ability of each guy is good enough for the secondary level, and then build things up in NY-area for Smith-Monaghan (with the winner basically in position to draw interest from one of the champions, if the belts haven't been unified at this point, for a voluntary defense).
