    Imagine early 2009 Andre Ward

with a thin resume, had dragged up a 154 guy for a fight at 168, with his sole hope of making a fight with a 160 guy at 168 the next year. And that being his legacy.

Would he be the GOD Golovkin is to his legion of blind followers?

Its sad when a great fight like Ward/Kovalev cant sell tickets or PPVs...yet Canelo/GGG is sold out and will do well on ppv

Make no mistake that GGG/Canelo success will be a result of HBO and media cramming GGG down peoples throats. A few years of paying Golovkin for fights that they wouldnt approve for anyone else so they can create an image.

HBO and the media need a star

In late 2015 Ward approached k2 about a fight at 168 in 2016 after each guy took a tuneup. k2 declines in a half hour. Ward is 6 ft with a 71 inch reach. Golovkin 5-10.5 70 inch reach. Both guys similar in size. Totally feasible fight. So where was the media leaning on GGG to make the fight? His resume was thin. How come ESPN wasnt putting pressure saying "this is a fight we need to see"? Because that fight didnt pit a young mexican star against an HBO hype creation.

But of course ESPN and HBO were allllll about putting the pressue on Canelo, of 0 wins against middleweights, to fight their new manny pacquiao.

As Ward said not long ago "if you flip flopped our resumes...and I tried to back away from a fight with him...they would have crucified me".

Imagine if GGG had a ugly style where he would hold, head butt, and foul his way to victory. And then after the biggest win of his career he sat out because of legal problems with his promoter. Do you think he would still have the fan base he does now?

So? What exactly is your point? You're saying you think people shouldn't root for Golovkin or something? Why do you care?

Ward took almost 2 years off....is 2 years younger and still has a legacy/resume GGG will not be able to achieve. I know thats tough for you to swallow. Ward sitting out after the super 6 didnt hinder his career at all. He came back and achieved what he wanted to do and got himself 2 wins that are better than any win GG will ever get. If anything that time off helped Ward. Stopped him from getting burned out. The Super 6 was tough.

You can just see these 3 replies and feel the shame and insecurity from GGG fans. Talking about fouls, cheating and boring styles.LOL

I'm a much bigger GGG fan than Ward but I have no problems admitting that Ward has a better resume and would beat him head to head. Feel free to look at my post history but I gave Ward his props for Kovalev 2. I actually said the first fight was a favorite mega fight of mine in recent years. It was a good tactical fight.

But I hate how Ward fans can't admit he doesn't have the style to attract a rabid fanbase like a GGG or Pacquiao. You can appreciate him and still admit he doesn't have a style that is going to bring in new fans. I love Rigo, but I don't try and get people to watch him with me because I know he is too much of a scientist for casuals to appreciate.

I also hate how Ward fans can't accept that he comes across as a diva outside the ring. He's not outwardly ****y but he's not as humble as he talks. He seems to have an attitude that boxing owes him more just because he's so talented. Yet he refuses to look at the facts that he doesn't sell very well and is unwilling to go the Mayweather route and be an actual villain if he wants to make that money.

And lastly I hate how Racist most Ward fans are. They act like anyone who isn't a Ward fan must have a hood in their closet. They just can't accept that Ward isn't the most exciting fighter in the world and call everyone who dislikes him a klan member. Yet many of the people who love GGG also love guys like Spence and Tank, because they love action fighters. I'll gladly give Ward his props and admit he has a place in history, but there's just as many insecure Ward fans as there are insecure GGG fans.

Ward offered the fight at 168, right around the time they had the fight made for Lemieux.

That doesn't even make any sense on why Golovkin would jump to 168 to fight Ward when Canelo vs Cotto winner was 2 months later and on the radar because he was their mandatory, and the opportunity for a bigger fight + another belt was accessible. Also, to correct you, Ward is 6'1".

HBO put the pressure on Canelo, because he he fought at 155 a number of times (which is Middleweight regardless of what you say), and he held a middleweight title + the middleweight lineal title. Not to mention, because they see the $$$ signs of that fight. Much more money to be had compared to GGG vs Ward. Ward had only fought Paul Smith at this time, and at 171.5. Why would GGG move up to 168 to fight a guy looking for tune-ups and barely even relevant at this point in time to the boxing world (due to his inactivity)?

It's not rocket science. Some of you posters have really poor logical capabilities. Probably the types that struggled with math in school, I imagine.

                  Hey Dummy,

Ward didnt ask Golovkin to cancel the Lemieux fight. I said "Ward contacted k2 in late 2015 about a fight in 2016 after each guy had a tuneup". The Lemiuex fight could have gone on as planned.

And Loeffler was also quoted as saying "if we went to 168 it would be for 1 fight and then we would go back down".

But we all know GGG couldnt afford to risk a loss if he was gonna chase the ginger so he opted instead for Dom Wade and a Welterweight.

Dont try to correct me. Ward aint no 6-1. HBOs crew noted several times how Ward was the obvious smaller man against Kovalev. Ward is 6 ft on a good day. Just as boxrec has him listed.

Wards "relevancy" is just an excuse for Golovkin and Loeffler. Wards name always rings bells in boxing no matter what. Even if he was off for 1.5 years. It doenst change Wards name and stature in boxing. Lets put it this way. If Ward was so irrelevant how come HBO and Kovalev wanted him? How come HBO was willing to pay him for Barrera and Brand fights just to get the Kovalev fight?

The irony of you talking about poor logical "capabilities". Oh my....too much!

This is more about what Golovkin was going to do after the Lemieux fight, surely? Golovkin prefered to try to fight Canelo next as he was mandated to do, instead of gunning for Ward. That was absolutely the smart thing to do from every angle, not least because he'd probably lose to Ward. The fact that the Canelo fight didn't come off at that time doesn't make it any less rational a decision. If that makes him an overhyped coward to you that's fair enough I guess - it takes all sorts. Maybe he should have 'dared to be great'. You still haven't said what the point of the thread was though.
