Was Mills Lane the Best Ref ever and is there a ref today close to that standard?

Mills Lane, a tough no nonsense ref, who would let you fight, but enforced the rules and didn't take any ****.

Are they any referees today close to that standard.

A lot of them seem to be scared to show some authority, enforce the rules and be fair and even in a fight.

Yes, I think that Steve Smoger is a comparable ref

Victor laughlin is the best reff at the moment that is comparable, unfortunately he has had a recent death under his watch and was also the reff for the blackwall / eubanks jnr fight and faced a ton of undue criticism..

They've all been fixed, including Lane. If I wasn't dead tired I would head over to Boxrec for some proof.

Bayless is the best ref hands down. I've never seen him lose control of a fight. Every ref has their own style of reffing a fight. People loved Weeks on Maidana-Mayweather fight but hated him in the Ward-Kovalev fight. You know Bayless style going into the fight. Just like you know certain umpire strike zones are more tight it forgiving than others and you adjust. You may not like his style but he's the best because he doesn't lose control of fights

I like Tony Weeks & Howard Foster. They let fighters fight inside & aren't so quick to part them.

I liked it when Lane went all Joe Smith and pushed Hopkins out of the ring.

But nah, i don't think there's too many good refs around at present.
