The people who have the most influence on fans are......

The punch stat guys. People score fights on whether these punch stat guys think a punch landed or not. These fans can't see for themselves they need to follow the opinion of a guy pushing a button.

How many times do we see posters after the fight using the punch stats as if they're facts? I don't think these posters know it's just a person pushing a button if he thinks a punch lands or not and usually gets it way wrong.

Other than being wrong , punch stats reflect the totality of the fight not by round.

So if you have one or two major rounds the punch stats will be skewed

Boxing scoring in general is fundamentally flawed and this is why we need to make back to a fight until there is a KO/TKO model

Casual boxing fans are their own worst enemies.

They've never scored a fight round by round, they view the fight as one big round.

So when they don't like the decision they cry robbery (I'm not talking about yesterday's fight, just in general)

If they took the time to score a fight they would be able to see how close a fight actually was and how some rounds are difficult to score.

I can't blame them, though. They just want to see a good fight and have some drinks with friends not score a fight with pen and paper like a boxing nerd.

How many people on here were crying robbery for Ward-Kovalev yet didn't have a scorecard when you asked them for one?

It's not only the punch stats, it's also the commentary. Nine out 10 times if the commentators are leaning towards one fighter the fans will back the fighter even if the actual fight doesn't go that way. Pacquiao/Marquez 3 was a particularly one sided love affair for Pacquiao by the HBO commentators. More recently Ward/Kovalev 1 and Golovkin/Jacobs were heavily influenced by the commentary.

Yep round by round scoring is how boxing works whether you like it or not. It's not a perfect system (because a narrow margin and a wide margin are both scored 10-9 usually) but it's the system they fight under.

The unofficial scorers/commentators have a big influence sometimes as well, and will often use those same punch stats to justify their view.
