Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia: I'd Be 'A Huge Star in Boxing' If Not for Long Layoff

NEW YORK Mikey Garcia didn't want his layoff to last 2 years, but he doesn't regret traveling the path that he took. Garcia wanted out of his promotional contract with Bob Arum's Top Rank Inc. and ultimately, that's what he got. His last fight for Top Rank was a 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat of Juan Carlos Burgos in January 2014 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

You'll be a huge star if you start beating some stars....this is your first step with Broner.

Mikey is a great kid but is he exciting enough to be a star?

Mikey is a great kid and a great fighter and a gentle, man who shows respect but can Mikey win the fans over to be a PPV star??? Probably not. But beating Broner who is hated and despised is a good start then beat Lomo or Paq.

It's funny because I thought Haymon would try to go the Linares, then Easter route to make Mikey a PPV caliber guy, but this Broner fight would raise his notoriety greater than those other fights would combined; despite Broner's hiccups, his name is still very strong in the boxing world.

I'm expecting Mikey to show some great stuff in this fight. Hoping Broner brings his A-game. He'll need it.

I don't know who is going to win this one but if Mickey can't hurt him its going to be a tough climb up that ladder.

Mickey needs to KO Broner. That will get him to that level of stardom he deserves. If he could KO him cold that would be the best! Dificult task since Broner is strong and can take a lot but if mickey really hits harder than maidana, with his accuaricy and getting to that chin he should be able to do it

If he didn't have that 2.5 year layoff and fought quality opposition during that time I'd rank him as top 3 p4p. Mikey is a special talent.

I think Salido was going to beat Garcia before "Mikey" took the way out that was offered to him.

I agree, but I think precision punching will be key here. I'm not sure if Broner has ever fought a guy that punches as sharp as Garcia. I assume Broner will have the speed advantage, but sharp punching can slow down the fastest hands.
