Golovkin has no defense, is slow of hand and feet, is prone to counter punching as witnessed in the Jacobs fight and like Kovalev has this image of being invincible that was given to him, he didn't earn that image. You can't get the image of invincibility when you fail to knock out and in the eyes of many boxing fans lost to a legitimate MW. Are we gonna give that to lil g string because he knocked out welterweights and tomato cans?

Canelo is going to expose Golovkin come September and half this forum will be on suicide watch.

To me it's a matter of can Golovkin pressure enough to tire Canelo out if that's how the fight goes.

Otherwise GGG is better of trying to use his jab like he did against Lemiuex. Cotto and Khan both landed their jab and right hand pretty frequently against Canelo.
That's exactly what will happen. Golovkin is gonna keep Canelo away with the jab. A good jab is one of Canelo's biggest weaknesses and he seems to have trouble dealing with it. its the biggest way to neutralize a counter puncher and since Canelo is a big time counter puncher, his weakness is evident with that. Secondly, stamina will play a huge part in this fight. Canelo has had subpar stamina and seems to fight in the spurts. You can't afford that against Golovkin. You have to fight every second of every round. His pressure is draining as it is. Add that Canelo will constantly look to time Golovkin's power punches, be aware of the jab coming at him and deal with the pressure...its gonna be taxing. Sure Canelo might have improved his conditioning BUT the Chavez fight wasn't a good indicator. He admitted to getting tired at points during the fight BUT Chavez wasn't throwing much at him. Lastly, Canelo does indeed look phenomenal against power punchers and ones who stand in front of him. BUT, the ones he usually did were either..

        A) Were predictable come forward brawlers who didn't have much technical skill
        B) Were smaller than him or had less physical attributes
        C) Were Chinny

Golovkin has a granite chin, Is taller and bigger and is a technically skill come forward fighter who's methodical despite not being particular fast and is elite at cutting the ring off.

i don't believe so. Canelo's head movement works extremely well against fighters who have non committed jabs or power shots BUT he always seems to struggle against fighters with stiff committed jabs. Cotto, Khan and Smith(When he decided to throw it) all had success and he had trouble dodging and seem to have trouble countering it. Also despite Canelo hurting his hand, the Smith fight is very telling. Smith was having success pressuring Canelo to the ropes when he had a high guard and was giving him a committed jab, Golovkin does that much better(Although Smith flat out lost and got KO'd)

You're seriously underestimating Golovkin. He has an underrated defense and is not as slow on his hands or feet as you think. There's a reason he's able to hit his opponents. Its not his power itself, its his timing and how he throws his shots. If he was so slow, why do opponents much faster and slicker than him get hit and have trouble getting away from him? if he was as mediocre as you claim, Jacobs would've won easily. But nah, he got knocked down(Wasn't a push) and lost a close competitive fight(jacobs wasn't too vocal about the decision)

If Golovkin had fought Chavez (at 164.5) and Canelo had fought Jacobs (at 160), what would we likely have seen ?

Golovkin would likely have blown out that version of Chavez, and would Canelo have even beaten Jacobs ? There might be very different perceptions going into this fight if we had different fights in the past.

Canelo and Jacobs are very different fighters, both extremely good, but Canelo doesn't have some of the attributes Jacobs has that we know troubles Golovkin - ie combination of size, power and foot speed. Canelo is relatively small at 160 (Canelo 5'9'', Golovkin 5' 10.5'', Jacobs 5' 11.5''), his power at 160 is yet to be known, but he doesn't have the foot speed Jacobs has.

His main attribute is hand speed and combinations, at that all relies on Golovkin staying in the 'uppercut pocket' where Canelo's best weapons can be deployed. If Golovkin keeps out of that zone and keeps Canelo on the end of his rangier jab, Canelo will have to find a way to get past the jab to deploy - same task that Lemieux had.

Canelo is more skilled than Lemieux, so not saying that can't happen, but the fight will all be about Canelo getting into range to where he has a debatable advantage - ie the trading area where it will be his combinations and defence vs Golovkin's power.

But firstly he has to get past the jab, and even then how Canelo comes out of exchanges is an unknown. Going to be a very stern test for him for sure.

Good post. For me there are so many questions and lots of intangibles that it's very difficult to predict what the outcome will be, because the outcome can be many different ones.

I have no prediction on this fight. While I am rooting for Triple G, I have to look at this in a realistic, honest way. But we will see what happens. Great points you made in your post.

But isn't that the Mexican style stand toe 2 toe and try knock each other out barely any head movement using your face as defense, this guy really is delusional to his skills and power and to how he's beaten his opponents and the advantages he's had over them, first jab he eats his world will fall apart he's never been hit by anyone with ggg power

Lets see how many rounds all of Connellos past foes would last with the G- man.
the ones who were supposed to get him ready for middle-weight.
                Cotto 5 rounds
                Khan 2 rounds
                Smith 2-3 rounds
                Chavez 5-6 rounds tko
So you Connello groupie fan boys how is this resume better when GGG would destroy these 4 guys within 5-6 rounds or less. But Connello has a better resume doe GTFOH with that nonsense. Connellos resume is not going to do squat for his preparation for this fight. He has not faced one fighter at 160 middle weight limit.

He won't be able to sustain it because he doesn't have the gas tank of someone like say Pacquaio. The longer he tries to sustain it the faster he gasses out.

A great ring tactician could beat GGG. Whitaker, Mayweather, SRL come to mind.

I think Canelo loses this fight.
