Comments Thread For: Why Mayweather-McGregor Cannot Hurt Boxing

By Andreas Hale - We're a little over a week removed from the announcement that rocked the combat sports world and there is still debate as to whether the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight on August 26th will "hurt" boxing. And, honestly, the mere thought is ridiculous. Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor can't do any more damage to boxing than boxing has already done to itself over the years...

    Sad and funny

It is sad yet funny how hard they are trying to sell this event, I won't even call this a boxing match. We all know what the outcome will be, another boxing lesson by Mayweather. The best boxers of this era couldn't beat him. What makes people think an amateur will?

This will draw in more casuals than any fight since Mayweather v Pacquiao so it would at least put the spot light on boxing for at least a weekend
They have to stack the card though, they owe that much to the boxing fans

This is very true. And it's funny how years ago all these people were saying Mayweather would get his ass kicked by a UFC fighter and you want to see how he would do etc now he's fighting one you are all backtracking and saying it's wrong, but if it wasn't happening you would say he's scared. Now I do think this is going to hurt the UFC, when McGregor gets schooled and probably KO'd. It's also going to make Dana White look like a buffoon for all the talking he's done, overall it's going to show that boxing is a far more advanced sport and that the UFC isn't even comparable. Will it break the PPV record? Probably, it will definitely be close.

It's going to be good from the standpoint of, when Mayweather destroys him inevitably some UFC/MMA fans are going to cross over and come to boxing. It's also good to see one sport vs another, fans of both are going to watch and so are loads of other people who don't normally watch boxing, who are just curious as to how it's going to go (regardless of who you are rooting for). The fight won't be competitive but as long as it's entertaining that's not going to be an issue.

And he would if he fought a UFC under their rules. Boxers will beat UFC fighters under Boxing rules and UFC fighters will beat boxers under UFC rules.

It could hurt boxing under two scenarios:
              1) If McGregor is crippled or killed by a brain injury as a result of Floyd's accurate counter-punching, in front of a massive PPV audience of casual sports fans.
              2) If McGregor somehow managed to pull-off the unthinkable, and actually knock Floyd out, or even out-box him. Boxing would lose credibility, and we'd never hear the end of the bragging from MMA fans.

Nah we need this. GBP been putting out got garbage Floyd has to save the day again. After Canelo Chavez I'm pretty sure boxing lost half of its fans. This fight will bring more sponsors, money, and viewers than any Canelo last 4 fights lol. Most people only talk about Floyd Maywether anyway when boxing is mentioned.

It hurts boxing because come Sunday morning when all the casuals and mma fans complain about the 4 year college course mayweather gives mcgregor on the "sweet science " they will say how boxing is boring and is dead. It will be like may/PAC all over again with people complaining about what they watched.

Some of the casuals don't know that mcgregor is a counter puncher going up against a master counter puncher. And mcgregor might get gun shy from missing and getting countered and not being able to slam Floyd to the ground or kick him. And old Floyd is only going to dish out what you give unless he turnes into pretty boy for one more night and gatties him.

This could be a disaster waiting to happen.
