I would say I'm amazed that some people are selling this low blows theory as the reason Kovalev got beat but nothing on this site is surprising. Kovalev was the one that caused the stoppage because he stopped fighting and wasn't protecting himself. The ref could've given him a warning about protecting himself however, Ward was in the position to land clean punches to his head if he wanted to. That's what a dirty fighter would do. I'll admit that some of the punches were low but I need at least one of Kovalev's fan to admit that he was exhibiting signs of a beaten man. He did not want to continue fighting and gave the ref no choice but to stop the fight.
He's Lucky Ward is really "Son Of God" and took mercy, because from what I hear Virgil Hunter got in his ass about taking mercy and looking at the Ref and not continuing to punish the already gone Kovalev.
I agree with Virgil! "Protect yourself at all times!" Those are the instructions given to both fighters. If the ref didn't stop you, DON'T STOP!

No problem man. He was a beaten man. It was a good fight

I appreciate that. This was a good fight but it's getting lost in all this talk about low blows. I'm as impressed with Ward as I'm disappointed in Kovalev. Ward did what the winner of this fight needed to do and that was to erase all doubts about the first fight. I'm not detracted by talk about low blows because just excuses some people want to cling to. I'm disappointed in Kovalev because he seem to not want as much as Ward did.
They both rabbit punched, so what? Ward wanted it more so when he saw that his best right hand could barely wobble Kovalev, he resulted to three low blows. Keep saying how masterful he was though, all the power to you.
The ref has a duty to deal with the rabbit punches. He is a ****e ref. I agree. The reason people are harping on about the low blows is that she stoppage came from one. And just like the ****e ref he is he called a ****e stoppage. Nobody wants to see anyone hurt. When I said how much punishment Groves dealt out unanswered in he's last fight some of the same people saying that this was a good stoppage were telling me that one was premature.
not true
that right-hand over the top, and subsequent pummeling, had nothing at all to do with the low blow
that is a weak excuse..... just like blaming the judges was a weak excuse in the first fight
in the first fight..... the judges did not let Ward off the hook when they had him down in round 2..... the judges did not allow Ward to climb back into the fight..... the judges did not make adjustments that Kovalev was unable to adapt to..... the judges did not cause Kovalev to fade badly down the stretch.....
the referee did not land the right hand that put Kovalev on ***** street
that was a weak excuse then, and this is a weak excuse now
