The reason Ward does not get respect is that it's clear in all his fights that he's not actually that good. He can't win without breaking the rules. His defense is not good enough to avoid his opponent without cheating. His entire claim to fame is inside fighting, but he does not know how to fight inside! Instead of he grabs to get inside and alternates hitting and holding with each arm. Cheating! Not real inside fighting!

James Toney was a real inside fighter, and he got respect. Ward is an overrated cheater with a great snapping jab and decent left hook only because he fights with his power hand as his lead, a terrible slapping right for the same reason, and a bunch of holding and hitting and cheating on the inside. How is that a great fighter? If he wasn't an American gold medalist fighting in Vegas or Cali, he would be disqualified every fight, so of course people hold that against him as a boxer. Why wouldn't they?

Back in the 90's when boxing and all other fighting was great full grown men were trying to prove they were the most bad a** mofos on the face of the earth by brutally bashing other men. Now there are little guy wimps trying to pitty pat there way to a decision. Society has been feminized maybe that is why. Not too many red blooded men left.

There's one guy from this era, ready to merge all the titles to one. So all the mandatories will have to fight him at the top. I hope the winner will not "Duck" King Kal-El.

I hope fan will get a little bit enlighten about the sport. Clinching is part of boxing, excessive clinching is illegal( an example of excessive is Henry Akinwande vs Lennox Lewis). Most people talk about boxing like it is a bar fight. There are rules people. Get knowledgeable about the sport or stop spewing ignorance.

First let me state, I agree with you about Ward's "style".
But isn't that what referees are for?
Too ensure the rules are adhered to, penalise fouls and cheating?
Fighting on the inside should be an integral part of boxing, and those fighters that are good at it should be let work.
Initiating clinches should be penalised and very, very rarely is.

Trying to smash the top of his head into Kovalev's face was Ward's main offensive tactic in the first fight, which was why Krusher kept putting him in head locks.

Ward is going to be doing the same thing again this time, and the big question is .. how will the ref react?

Will he stand back and let them get on with things, like Byrd did?

Will he warn and possibly penalise Ward for doing it or Kovalev for stopping him?

The ref is going to very important in this fight, imo, even more so than the judges, who maybe won't even be needed.

                    1) ... stating the obvious...

                    2) ... Weeks refereed many difficult fights (including Floyd Mayweather Jr -- Maidana I and Danny Garcia -- Lucas Matthysse)...
