  • Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia Wants to Remain Free Agent for Big Fights

Reigning WBC lightweight champion, Mikey Garcia, is moving up to junior welterweight to face former four division world champion Adrien Broner on July 29th. But, he's made it clear that he will be moving back down in weight and hope to face the likes of Jorge Linares and Vasyl Lomachenko in the future. Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) was in the ring back in January, when he scored a brutal third round knockout over Dejan Zlaticanin to capture the WBC title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Given the landscape at 13, Mikey probably benefits most from being a promotional free agent. He can make the Easter fight after Broner then he can also be available for GBP guys at 130 who will be moving up soon.

The only bad thing is he likely will not get Crawford or Loma fights, the 2 guys most of us want to see him fight.

True, but I think he and Mikey unify after the Broner fight win or lose. Mikey said he's going back to 135 and that is the next logical fight assuming Easter beats Shafikov.

        Then the winner fights Linares..

im a big garcia fan glad hes finally getting the fights he deserves. sucks what happened to him with top rank. unfortunately his win that will bring him mainstream is against my hometown fighter.

i do think mikey garcia with his mexican decent is going to be one of the biggest stars in boxing within 15 months tho. barring an unexpected lose to broner obviously

Good luck Mikey! Stay free as long as you can! But if you have to choose one, I say go with Schaefer! So far Mikey has gotten a title shot and a fight with Broner without a promoter. NOT BAD!

He may say he's a free agent but I definitely believe there's someone behind him guiding me and he's not doing it for free...
