  • Comments Thread For: Jackson: If That Was Andre Ward's Best, Then He is Past His Prime

    Sergey Kovalev says he overrated Andre Ward before their first fight, which was one of the reasons the former champion claims he over-trained for it. At worst, the 33-year-old Ward is considered one of the top three boxers, pound-for-pound, in the world on most credible lists. Like Kovalev, however, John David Jackson wasn't as impressed as he thought he'd be by Ward, who overcame difficulty early to score a close unanimous-decision victory over Kovalev in their light heavyweight title fight November 19 in Las Vegas.

    Considering the fight was super close and could have went either way doesn't say much for kovalev. Their trash talk is horrible haha

        what really was wards 'prime'. He nearly lost to froch, people forget that, he won by one round. Dawson was never much good (pascal beat him ffs and stevenson took him out in a round) and kessler was damaged goods after calzaghe played with him. His CV and skills are incredibly overrated.

            all I could take from that interview.....

            * Kovalev could not hit Ward with his best punch
            * Ward cannot improve

            the first point is correct, and a problem for Team Kovalev..... and the second point is wrong, but also a problem for Team Kovalev

              Neither of these fighters are in their prime. At 33 and 34 years old how can you be in your prime years as an athlete?
              Pro-boxing is a little different than some sports because experience weighs more heavily in boxing than it does in say athletics or soccer.
              Ward was probably in his prime when he won the super six so getting his hands on the LHW belts years later proves he is elite.
              Kovalev peaked a little later, maybe when he won his belts. He looked good against Hopkins and the in the first Pascal fight too when Pascal still had something about him.

                  Both will be better in 2nd fight.....I favor Ward

                  I favor Ward because he'll make adjustments and as I said before the first fight I felt he needed one more fight to adjust to the weight and to be sharper. I didn't like Ward's physique as he looked like a blown up LHW. I feel the war with Kov benefited Ward more so because he definitely got the rust off. I expect a more acclimated Ward to the weight and therefore will be sharper and stronger. Kov will have the benefit of experience in fighting Ward for a second time.

                    The truth is, Ward has to make more adjustments in the rematch than Kovalev. Ward was seen as the far superior boxer and that wasn't the case in the first fight. He was outboxed for the first half of the fight and got dropped and ****** up.

                    All Kov needs to do is work on his stamina. He can beat Ward with the same game plan he had in the first fight. I don't see Ward beating Kovalev if he comes in with the same game plan he had.
