You have it literally backwards. By the way what was Ward "reacting to" when he held excessively against Barrera and everyone else he's fought in his career? Or are you going to pretend it was all his opponents who forced him to hold in every fight?People still believing the lie that Ward was the one fouling?
Kovalev started the fight doing this. These gifs are from the first round.
Wards holding was the reaction to Kovalev continually pushing his head down when he got close. That shit tires fighters out and holding supports the weight.
As for the Kovalev fight, you don't understand what you're watching. The way Ward establishes himself inside is coming in with his head low in a dangerous position, and then using underhooks to control his opponent. What is the counter to underhooks? Overhooks. So it was actually Ward's underhooks that forced Kovalev to react with overhooks. Likewise, it's Ward's headbutts that forced Kovalev to react with an overhook over the head.
And if you don't think that's justified, guess what, Ward bloodied Kovalev's nose in I think the 9th round with either an elbow or a headbutt, I forget, and then in the 10th he delivered a subtle knee into Kovalev's face when Kovalev was on the ground, so there you go! Or will you excuse that too? I can't remember Kovalev ever injuring an opponent with a foul, but it seems like Ward does it constantly. Almost ended Kessler's career with a headbutt. Cuts Kovalev's nose and could have broken it with a foul. But you blame Kovalev for trying to counter Ward's dirty tactics and protect himself? You are biased as fook for real! That's the plain truth of it I won't even debate it. It's obvious. And if Ward was a true inside fighter comfortable BOXING in the pocket, it would look like Lomachenko.
But Ward doesn't have the power or footwork to be a true inside BOXER, so the only way he feels safe on the inside is by using underhooks to pull his opponent in and then control their arms with holding. That is not true inside fighting! Ward's reputation is entirely wrong. If you want to see what real inside fighting looks like, check out JCC Sr. or Roberto Duran. All Ward does is foul and cheat, and yet biased fans like you try to justify it even after he's proven it's who he is in the ring so many times.
