should clinching be taken more seriously?

At present i get the feeling that clinching is disapproved of, but not something that many feel should result in points deducted or disqualification.

In fact its incredibly rare for any points to be taken away for excessive holding and i may be wrong but i cant think of any recent examples of a fighter being disqualified for clinching?

But why shouldnt they? In football/soccer, if you handle the ball repeatedly, you would get sent off and banned. Because thats not what the game is about. The same with boxing, its about throwing punches and landing punches, its not a wrestling match. If you threw punches in wrestling you'd be disqualified, if you wrestle in boxing you should be disqualified too.

I remember on the old fight night video games, if you clinched 3 or 4 times during the fight you would get points taken away. Any more and its a disqualification. In real life fighters have been known to clinch 88 (!!!) times with no repercussions. How does a damn video game have a better handle on the sport than supposedly world class officials?

I thought a clinch was something you do as an instinct when hurt, not as a tactic throughout the fight.

And the most important thing for me is, who wants to watch this ****? Noone leaves a fight and says 'wow can you remember that tactical clinch in round 4, what a move'. They want to talk about knockouts, combos, punches being traded.

Lets take this **** out of the sport....

You better not be a fan of Vlad "Dr Velcro Hammer" Klinchko.....

Last week you were rooting for a notorious clincher named Kell Brook.

No guys should deal with it better like Errol Spence and not look to the ref to bail them out. Work hard, shove, put that forearm out which is also illegal but is a counter to clinching to create space, then be able to shorten up their shots especially to the body and uppercuts.

I can't be bothered if guys are lazy in the clinch and looking for help or if they aren't good enough to deal with such a basic thing.

every gym ive been too ive been taught to tie up when out of position to negate the oncoming offense from my opponent, southpaw vs ortho fights have more clinching due to stances. U were just rooting for kell brook who is a clincher, Kov did a hell of a lot of clinching as a tactic to avoid inside fighting which was a good tactic but no complaint from you.

100% agree. I've been suggesting that a point should be deducted damn near as a rule when you get hurt or dropped & aggressively try to hold forever. In general doe holding & clinching slow up the flow of the fight & seldom leads to more action only less action & should be stopped & penalized much more often then it is. This is a asses in seats business & people want excitement, action & KO's.

And here is where you show your limited boxing knowledge. Holding is what you do when hurt. There is a difference between holding and clinching. You can work in a clinch and a lot of guys do inside work that way. A hold is literally hugging your opponents body with no intent to let go until the ref comes in to break it up, which is what you do to buy time when you're hurt...or you're Wladimir Klitschko
