Where did Spence's "destined for greatness" rep come from??

I first heard about him when he dropped Broner in sparring.
He's not loud, not mean, not a 1-punch monster, not any of the things that tend to generate a lot of superficial hype. But, for a while now, a lot of people have deemed him to be the next big thing. It seems to have started with industry people who have worked with/around him but I'm curious, where did all the "hype" come from?

I think you answered your own question. Yeah, i think it started with the Broner thing and then other people added fuel to the fire saying he's the next big thing, mostly people around him or that have been in the gym with him.

You're right though, he doesn't possess those kind of things that usually generate hype. It's not even like he was an outstanding amateur or olympic medalist or anything either.

A lot of people in the game do think he is the real thing though, so we'll see, he might be. Plenty of so called "experts" have been wrong many times before though, with guys even more hyped than Spence too.

You can tell he has that IT factor in the ring, and also all the praise from other pros it doesn't just happen if you ain't bout it.

Yeah. I first saw him against Algiere and thought he did well in stopping him. Also seemed cool on the mic after the fight-not propping himself up in that annoying way like a Broner. He showed good power and I liked his style. Then he beats Bundu and that's good.

But the next thing you know, this site is blowing up with people saying he's the next big thing. I like the guy and wanted to get on board, but Algieri and Bundu? I mean, those are good wins but I don't really think they indicate greatness by any means. I don't know where the hype comes from or why so many jumped on it so quickly. Either way, Saturday should be a great gauge. If he beats Brook in an impressive fashion or even if it's close, I'll say he's for real. If he doesn't, then I'll still be a fan. I like his style. However, I'm not going to say this guy is a future legend for Algiere and Bundu.

I heard about this Broner thing like 4 years ago, then you hear about the Mayweather incident, then you hear more and more boxers and trainers speaking about him. I think it's safe to say that this fight would answer a lot of things about him. He has been building himself up gradually, he wasn't sold as someone that was avoided by everyone at 147 even though his handlers could have, they waited for his opportunity and they are taking him abroad to prove himself, like like all round.

One of my uni friends that follows boxing used to talk loads about him back in early 2013 saying he's going to be the next star in boxing and I remember boxrecing him and seeing a prospect with 3 or 4 fights, saw he didn't win a medal at the Olympics and wondered "what makes him think Spence is/will be special?" ..... by then no one on here was talking about him and then by 2015 his name started popping up on here and I started YouTubing his fights. I could see he was a quality fighter but it wasn't enough to convince me he would be the next star.

After Steamrolling Bundu and Algieri, I'm still not completely convinced he is the truth but it's hard to ignore the sparring stories with Floyd and Broner but hey those type of stories helped do a lot for GGG's hype and they are doing the same thing for Spence.

Tomorrow is D-day for Spence, we get to see if it's real or not. It's not over if he loses but he'll probably never be seen as "The Truth" again if he does.

He messed Floyd up. that's where it all came from.

Floyd has always been overrated himself. he is actually not that athletic. he never fought a true fast twitching negro in his prime either.

the only guy was Kostya Tszyu's leftover Judah who was a mental case. but Judah made Floyd look ****** for 5 rounds then gassed like he always do.

I'm not surprised tbh. Guys like Ray Leonard, Hearns would've all beaten Floyd at WW.

Yes, same two reasons for me.

First heard about him when Mayweather was trying to pit him with Thurman who probably didn't even know who the guy was. You probably saw his undercard fight the first time I did. I didn't even remember the opponent. He won, but I wasn't impressed. He was getting countered viciously, and maybe most fighters do, but I'm just saying it didn't leave a lasting impression. So maybe this fight will, if he wins.
