IMO, Tyson is as overrated as Tua is underrated. That being said, if both were bigger/taller they would dominate the HW division for ages.

I appreciate that he's the fighter who made pro boxing popular among youth in Russia in 90's (this is where I'm from). People wouldn't care that much about the sport over here if it wasn't for him
Some dog owners name their pit bulls after Tyson. I had a friend and he's called Tyson because he loves ****ing people up. Tyson has that kind of fame that went over American borders. Even Pacquiao and Mayweather never had that kind of international fame when you think about it. When you ask a casual person about some boxers, Tyson is always the second name that gets mentioned after Ali. I don't know how it is in America, but that's how it is over here. Ali, Tyson, maybe Roy Jones and that's it, they barely know any other names
And I get that he was famous not because of his resume but because of the manner how he was winning fights. Definitely one of the most entertaining fighters of all time. But when you look at his resume you start thinking that all this hype isn't justified. Holyfield and Lewis were much better and they were coming from the same generation of heavyweights. I made this thread because I got tired arguing with casuals when I say that Tyson is not even top 5 heavyweight of all time
Man, you can even make an argument for Golovkin's resume being better and I'm not hating on Tyson, I have a lot of respect for him
PAC is the best known and beloved fighter in the world, and he did it in the crooked American boxing jurisdiction.
Since you didn't bother to give Tyson's rating, how can he be overrated???
Can you be any sillier?
Please do. Boxing needs as many silly lads as it can get these days!!!

No he isn't overrated at all. But I'd agree if someone would say that he didn't get the chance against the all time great fighters during his prime. But beside that, he beat a couple of very good fighters, who would have undoublty hold the belts in the last era of the division. I disagree a lot with Breadman for example, but he was spot on just a couple of weaks ago when breaking down Tyson's opponents.

I think so. All we ever hear about is his prime or his potential. What about results? How long was this "prime"? What did he accomplish during this "prime"? And I like Tyson, but I can't deny his legacy is more myth than reality

I think you can make a case for that whole era being overrated. Bowe was ill disciplined, Tyson a basket case, and Holyfield a cruiser. That Lewis emerged dominant from that era is about as credible as Wlad's dominance. Look at some of the guys who won belts through that era. Decent fighters but not elite.
Tyson's resume ranks him nowhere, except there was a period where he unified the belts and defended well.
But overrated? Nah, he was awesome. He was the most exciting heavyweight I've seen.
