  • Mayweather "gives" Sept. date to Canelo

Now it's being reported that Mayweather is "giving" September to Canelo. -Boxingnews

    Yeah, sure!

Mayweather may be a top 30 all time, but what BS. After talking up how he has May and September, Haymon and Showtime had to tell him, we aren't cutting into our profit margin for your ego.

Undoubtedly, Showtime didn't even give him a date in that month as available.

It will be interesting if Canelo/GBP lets sleeping dogs lie, or if they come out saying that Mayweather didn't give him ****. Could be a fun exchange to watch over the next week.

That's because Canelo wasn't moving off that date and Floyd didn't want to risk embarrassment if Canelo/GGG (a real fight) sells as good or better than the garbage fight he's signing on for with Mr. Lucky Charms. His ego couldn't handle it.

I get what you are saying about the "ego" thing but lets not fool ourselves either, May vs Mac sells more PPV's than GGG vs Canelo. Problem is both fights would lose revenue if even placed in the same month. We all know that May vs Mac is a money grab for anyone involved so why risk the only reason the fight is taking place which is the $$$.

I think itd be safe to say, May vs Mac sells a minimum of 500k more than Canelo vs GGG.

Mayweather should stage this fight 4th of July weekend & block the Pac fight...

I honestly don't think there is any cross-over appeal. The fans who are going to pay for Canelo/GGG are not the same fans who would pay for Floyd/Conor. But, even though the Floyd fight likely sells more, I don't think Floyd's ego could handle another million plus PPV fight competing with his. Especially when the GGG/Canelo fight stands to be way more competitive and has the potential to be a FOTY.

lol gayweather jr is delusional enough to believe that. if he was as big a shot caller as he claims he would take "his" date back from ginger and ggg. he's not though

Anyone who knows how money works knows Floyd vs Conor could happen on any day of the year except maybe the Super Bowl.

That said the fight never seemed destined for September, but good job by Floyd of always keeping himself in the news & getting talked about for non-stories.

Floyd is a genius for getting the people who dislike him the most keeping him relevant.

Smart move, almost no boxing fan would forego Canelo-GGG. Floyd is trying to save face by "giving" Canelo the date but he knows deep down it's a business move not to compete. If it was another fight like Mayweather-Pacquiao II, or Mayweather-Thurman, that would've been an issue. But for Mayweather-McGregor then Mayweather would've been crazy to do that. First of all it hurts Canelo-GGG, and secondly it hurts Mayweather-McGregor. Being in completely separate months will be better for both.
