I hate he hasn't fought a live body outside of fonfara since getting the title but if we give Canelo **** for dropping the belt then don't we have to give kovalev **** for ducking the purse they ask for and were granted. Just being fair. That's actually a 50/50 fight. But just saying.

He's like wilder, holds on to just one belt his whole career and thinks he's the king. While the better champions hold the other 2 major belts. Kovalev and wilder. Or now son of the devil.

Whether you want to call Stevenson a ducker, or just a bad businessman who doesn't understand spending money (giving away higher splits) to make money (grow your fanbase with better wins and bigger fights like Pascal in Canada so you can demand higher purses in the future), all that matters from our perspectives, as fans, is that he doesn't care about the fans, and he doesn't care about fighting the best, and he doesn't care about his legacy. If you're not willing to give up a few extra percentage points to give the fans the fights they want and build your legacy, name, and brand, like GGG and Kovalev both did, hell, even like Canelo just did, then why should the fans give a **** about you? Why would any fan (looking at YOU) support a fighter like that?Last edited by Boxing Logic; 05-16-2017, 12:45 AM.

Diamond titles aren't supposed to be defended. They're supposed to be a symbolic title won in a specific superfight. However, Kovalev wanted to fight for Pascal's diamond title and Kovalev wanted the winner of the fight to be named the mandatory to Stevenson.
In addition to wanting to be named the mandatory, Kovalev also wanted 50% of the purse bid, even though a mandatory would be entitled to much less than that.
The WBC & Stevenson agreed to all of Kovalev's demands. So Kovalev was allowed to win the diamond title, become the mandatory, and split the purse 50/50. Stevenson agreed to everything.
A purse bid was ordered after Kovalev's HBO contract expired and Kovalev was a television free agent.
After everything was agreed to, Kovalev blatantly ducked the fight, refused to participate in the purse bid, vacated his title and position and resigned with HBO instead of fighting Stevenson.
