insider stories- ggg v canelo sparring

doug fischer- Golovkin hurt Alvarez a few times – a hook at the end of the second round visibly stunned him and some body shots made him wince – but the young man kept his head and found ways to compete even when he was clearly tired (a combination of the altitude and GGG’s pressure) in the last two rounds.

Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, wanted his middleweight to get some work with Canelo in order to experience the faster hands of a naturally smaller fighter. Golovkin was not supposed to give Canelo the “full treatment,” and it was clear from the sparring I saw that he was indeed holding back.

Still, Golovkin “holding back” was a lot for Canelo, only 20 at the time, to deal with.

Second witness - A boxing insider who was present at the Big Bear (CA) gym on the day when Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez sparred has shared his account of what happened: “Golovkin hurt Canelo twice – first liver and then head. Canelo came out strong trying to hurt him right away. Then Golovkin got him with a nice liver shot and then a few head shots that made Canelo spar a lot more gently. It was awkward in the room. It was Golovkin’s first real sparring in America. He was just here from Germany. I think Canelo (then age 21) was just getting ready for Afonso Gomez in Los Angeles (TKO 6 in September 2011).”

sounds like it was quite one sided.... maybe a sign of things to come in september....

This was an interesting story a while back that has been endlessly belabored. I doubt this session is relevant for the September fight. GGG was in his prime at the time (not the case anymore), and Canelo was barely removed from his teenage years. This session was like big bro keeping little bro in check when he tries to test him after little bro thinks he's learned a few things. Canelo is now entering his prime and has improved a lot since that time.

With that said, I got GGG by TKO10. Canelo may have improved from a B- to a B+ or even A- (if we're being generous) fighter, but it will not be enough for an A+ level fighter in GGG.

I don't know how much GGG has really improved. Not his fault, I feel just a lot of his opposition didn't push him to a next level. He's obviously good, and I'm riding his train against Canelo, but Canelo has improved leaps and bounds from when he was 20.

Been trying to tell these Cendelita heads that "Lil g" is going to do a number on the diva.

Danny Jacobs was HUGE on fight night against "Lil g" and he is probably the second best MW in the world....even so, Jacobs got jabbed to death and had to ride the bike the entire fight to avoid getting KO'd.

The diva doesn't have anything even remotely close to the footwork required to survive 12 rds against "Lil g". Also, like I've been saying, that left to the liver will be the key.....Diva's got short arms, his elbows don't reach far enough to sufficiently reach the liver area. She'll be forced to lean forward or far to the right to protect the liver which'll play right into "Lil g's" hands with either the uppercut or the left hook.

This fight will show exactly why Canelita has avoid this fight for so long.......she remembers what happened during that infamous sparring session a few years ago, just like the witnesses remember it.
