I still think you have a great point about Nacho perhaps not being the most well-informed regarding the advancements made in strength and conditioning and the new methods for a guy to properly make weight.

Whatever happened during the Oscar fight, was a complete catastrophe, and you're not wrong to draw a parallel to the situation here.

      • People talking about this cut being way too early are incredibly short-sighted, and just looking to pitch their two cents to an easy narrative. In the same breath, people are saying he looks like death and gaunt. That's exactly why he's cutting now - if he left the cut to the wire, he'd look like this going to the ring!

He's a bigger guy cutting down a pretty serious amount of weight - his only hope is to cut early and get his body accustomed to this weight. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, but leaving this dramatic cut to the last minute would be suicide.

He's probably getting killed by Canelo regardless, but be smart about it people.

Chavez's best weight at this stage of his career is probably 168, he's not naturally a thickly muscled guy like Alvarez who is shorter and more bull like.
Both guys have shown the ability to cut a lot of weight 24 hours before a fight and then rehydrate 15lbs or more with no problem.
But you're not going to rehydrate and gain back weight that you actually lose as real mass. This looks like what is happening to Chavez here.

The reason we see fighters like Chavez in the past, and Canelo putting on so much weight after the weigh-in is because they simply lost water weight, and drained their glycogen storages leading up to the 2-3 days before the weigh-in - they slowly dried themselves out.

So they don't actually lose any real mass...

That is the complete opposite of what happened with Oscar against Pacquiao - they actually took off REAL WEIGHT from DLH to the point where he only rehydrated 1-2 pounds for the actual fight.

Now - you're right in that usually at the very start of a training camp a fighter who doesn't stay in top notch condition year-round can expect to lose about 15-20 pounds, BUT STILL, he should only lose those final 10 pounds or so the 2-3 days leading up to the weigh-in - as it is all water weight.

Yeah, it seems like the same thing may happen with Chavez Jr. He literally looks like death right now and still has 5 pounds to lose.

Not sure what their plan is. But at 169.5 right now, Chavez is not looking too lively at the moment.

Seems completely accurate. I've noticed guys like Cotto, Canelo in the past when losing the last few pounds to make weight have done it during fight week as you said the last 2 to 3 days before weigh in. Which is the remaining water weight and then they dry out. Where as with Oscar they had him very near 147 for weeks. It wasn't a case of losing water but just losing real weight, losing muscle, depleting the body. Then when they tried to put weight back on it back fired because his body got used to that weight. It wasn't water weight that was lost, it was real weight loss, muscle loss.

I know that Chavez is now losing muscle, he's definitely having his body depleted. I don't know if it's at the extreme rate as Oscar or as bad as Oscar was. But it does seem to be similar, even if it's just slightly similar.

All I know is 10 days out from the fight and Chavez does not look good at all. And fighters usually don't look like that 10 days out. It's usually more like 2 to 3 days out.

Obviously nobody in boxing gives a **** though. Not the commission and not the sanctioning body. As long as they're getting money then who the **** cares, right? But then they wanna act like they care about fighters...
This is a very fair point. Jr could come out of this whole thing extremely damaged. Making 164.5 is going to be very dangerous.

I understand A-Sides need to flex their muscles (and I love Canelo, BTW) and get advantages but making the fight at 164.5 was kinda ridiculous. Who knows, this might spectacularly backfire and the fight gets called off or some other crazy ****.

Remember Chad Dawson? He was WEAK AS **** vs Ward and was never the same again. Thankfully he was not hurt (at least not in a serious way that we know of). But yea, you get the point I'm trying to make.
