I remember growing up seeing hip-hop magazine covers and music videos featuring those guys regularly. Floyd and Winky were the least popular of this bunch. Although I was an avid watcher (b/c of family), my friends only knew those mentioned above. These days boxers aren't really mentioned in pop culture w/ the exception of Broner, but he lost a lot of that buzz after Maidana did a number on him. The net went wild clowning with videos and memes after that fight.
It seems like Gervonta Davis is starting to build up a similar following to the one Broner had (based on his recent growth in social media impressions). But the common factor in both of those instances is the presence of Floyd. The young kids know him because of the obsession TMZ and hip-hop have with his lifestyle.
It has a little to do with boxing. There are few to no avid followers of the sport under the age of 30 in black America. (I'm in this age group)
They'd buy fights if they knew who the fighters were. Lots buy UFC fights regularly. (Lots of familiarity due to video games)
