The writer of this piece assumes that the term "superstar" refers to how popular a person a person is. I don't recall the term being used before Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlin, Elgin Baylor and Oscar Robertson came on the scene. And there was some debate at first as to whether Jerry West was a "superstar." At that time the NBA was much less popular The reference was clearly on skill level. Now it is applied to anyone who is popular so that any of the Kardashians qualify as a superstar. If we are talking about skill level, superstardom will be determined by the success on the field of battle and no one has to sell villains, smiles, and race hatred. Unfortunately, the money flows from, villainy, jingoism, and race.
