Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Canelo-Chavez Likely Biggest Event With 2 Mexicans

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes May 6th's fight between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is "probably the biggest event with two Mexican fighters in history." The Golden Boy' represents Alvarez and believes the fight will be bigger than when he rematched Chavez Sr back in 1998. "We haven't had a Mexican showdown on Cinco de Mayo weekend in a very, very long time. And the demand has been incredible. I haven't seen anything like it since Barrera vs. Morales; since De La Hoya vs. Chavez Sr. This is going to be an incredible weekend for all boxing fans

Such is the state of boxing today, that Canelo vs Chavez Jr. can become the biggest event between 2 mexicans over De La Hoya vs Chavez and Barrera vs Morales.

Those fights had fighters that were dedicated to their craft.

In this fight one guy is dedicated to his craft, though he needs to upgrade his opponents in his next upcoming fights. Against a guy who is not dedicated and is a spoiled brat.

This is what will become the biggest event between 2 mexicans. Wow

Such is the state of the world! The old timers, Mexicans, and others did not have the benefit of global communication, social media and such. It would have been great if they had. In a different market environment, I can see Canelo taking on all comers and fighting every few months as the old timers did. But things have changed. We are talking about multi-millions of dollars at stake. That changed everything. Now it would seem almost irresponsible to take such risks. Anyway, it is for Oscar to hype the fight and for us to call him on his exaggerations.

Oscar so high he don't even know him & Vargas got the record for biggest all Mexican PPV (935k buys for those keeping score). And I'm not entirely confident it'll surpass Oscar vs Fernando although it'll for sure compete with it even if it doesn't surpass it I believe.

I don't understand why all of you are getting butt hurt about Oscars comments. It's his job as the promoter of this fight to hype up the boxers and the event to maximize earnings for everyone involve. Anyone, that takes him literally obviously doesn't understand what a promoter job is. Of course Canelo vs JR isn't the biggest fight in boxing history anyone with half a brain understands that.

Yup, it's all about the money now.

              Honor and glory is lost.

It should be about Honor, Glory and Money.

But now it's only about Money.

Sadly this is likely true in terms of revenue generation and global awareness

I agree with you on Barrera-Morales. In terms of financially, this farce of a fight has a chance to become the richest event.

But as you stated honor and glory mean a lot more to me the boxing fan, than money.

yes Oscar is probably high but him vs vargas isn't considered an all Mexican ppv since both were born in the US and were Olympians for the US. This may turn out to be the highest all Mexican ppv but by no means is it anywhere near the best match up between 2 Mexicans. Barrera vs morales, Barrera vs Marquez were much more skilled and courageous fighters than Canelo or Chavez. They just didn't benefit from the same level of promotion, favoritism, or name inheritance as what's happening with this fight.
