Once you start talking about retirement, you've already got one foot out of the ring. Remember coWard, you didn't want any excuses after this one.....goes both ways.

I remember someone on here berating other posters who thought the retirement talk was legit. Saying something along the lines of "anyone with half a brain knows ward is just using it to negotiate". It's funny when people are so sure of themselves, to the point of belittling others...then it turns out they didn't know ****.

I've seen multiple fighters ranked ahead in people's P4P rankings throughout the years, Bute, Golovkin, Lomachenko etc. no matter what he does they act like they have amnesia and prop someone else up.

He did have to rematch Kovalev, it was in the contract that he signed. That's the whole point and why he got so much crap when he mentioned that ****** retirement talk. Obviously it just sounded like he was scared of a Kovalev rematch. Even Mayweather just about clowned him for that. And GGG and Jacobs had no rematch clause. GGG can fight Canelo for the biggest payday probably ever or Saunders to go down in history as a unified champ, which is important to him at least. Be honest, would you really put those lofty options on hold just to rematch Jacobs? At GGG's age, only a fool would do that in my opinion.

I agree that Ward is #1 P4P but I have never liked him personally. Something about him has always seemed so phony

Ward could never go out with a win like that, not in his nature, better to go out with an L in the rematch. Hell of an athlete and what he achieved in 2016 is mind blowing after that layoff.

Maybe it was ward who doesn't actually know what he's talking about. He needs to realize it was just a negotiating tactic.

"I’ve done what I wanted to do. I’m not concerned with trying to prove anything, because you’re never gonna win that."
So, you're telling us your motivation is waning and you have nothing left to prove to yourself. Great, I'm stoked for the rematch!

We'll see how it goes but I hope he finds that fire again. He's definitely been less aggressive since the layoff but I can still see him performing at the top if he can tap into that fiercely competitive nature he has. Maybe the harassment from Kovalev and his fans will light a fire under him.

Before the first fight: "Ward will never fight someone like Kovalev"

After the first fight: "Ward's too scared to fight him again"

Before the 2nd fight: "Ward's shook, he's only fighting him because he knows he lost the first fight"

After the 2nd fight: "Ward would never fight Kovalev again even though he already beat him twice"
