Kovalev is the puncher but he wins this fight by controlling the distance. Ward has to get inside and make it ugly, maybe get lucky with a head butt.
Kovalev can't get caught up in a wrestling match because Ward wants to be on the inside, where he can smother Kovalev's power.
If the Russian uses his superior jab to control the distance and set up the right hand, it's an easy night for him. Kovalev 8-4.Comment

True. Kovalev got caught up in showing he could out muscle Ward on the inside, maybe it was fatigue or just the Russian being hard headed, but it was the wrong strategy because the judges decided he was being outworked.Comment

Maybe the body shots in rounds 6, 7, and 9 paid dividends in the latter rounds, but Ward barely got to the body at all in the first four rounds, and Kovalev was already tired by round 5. If you're an SOG fan I understand wanting to give SOG credit for that, but rewatch the fight. Round 1 was all jabs, no body work. Round 2 Ward got dropped and didn't land anything all round. Round 3 Kovalev was already tiring by himself and didn't do ****, but neither did Ward. Ward maybe edged the round if you're generous, but neither did any damage. Round 4 Kovalev came back and won the round clean, Ward didn't do anything.
So which round exactly of the first four did Ward do amazing body work to slow Kovalev by round 5? Honestly? Which of the first two rounds did Ward do so much damage that Kovalev took his foot off the gas even in round 3?
The truth is Ward was not the principle force that tired Kovalev out. Kovalev tired out all by himself, at least initially. Ward surely capitalized once that happened and landed body shots that would tire him more later, but the initial tiring out? That was all Kovalev. The question is why? I have no idea. He also tired out against Chilemba in Russia. Both times he has had different excuses, but both times it had little to do with his opponent, and everything to do with him.
Either he will figure it out and fix it before the rematch, and likely win, or he won't fix it, and will likely lose, and lose legitimately this time.Comment
