George Foreman was at the Soho Grand Hotel in Manhattan on Monday announcing a special one-night elimination tournament featuring eight world class heavyweights, who will battle each other in three fights of four rounds each in one exciting evening...for $5 million dollars! The event is expected to be held at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia in October or November. The pay-per-view event has signed heavyweights O'Neil Bell, Shannon Briggs, Chris Byrd, Steve Cunningham, Alexander Dimitrenko, Ty Fields and Samuel Peter. An eighth spot is open and top-rated heavyweights are invited to contact the promoter. A second show is planned in Manhattan in May, 2007, featuring eight world-rated middleweights.
Foreman, who will be joining broadcast partner Colonel Bob Sheridan at ringside, said at the announcement, "Everybody says boxing needs something... (the tournament) is a chance to do something different." Foreman later joked, "I would have beat Muhammad (Ali) if it had been four rounds."
The show will introduce a new scoring system, call time for instant replays and use eight high-definition cameras to capture the action for the pay-per-view audience.
This sounds awsome, Sam Peter, Alexander Dmitrenko, Chris Byrd, Shannon Briggs, sounds like a great event I hope it happens...
I hope this happens, I wouldn't miss it, people would watch boxing more if they had events like this happen often, thanks for info
I will be VERY surpised if this comes off. VERY surprised.
I have to agree with you, I dont want it to happen either though. I think it would be horrible for the sport just because it's 4 friggan rounds some fighters are at a disadvantage because they dont actually start fighting till the midrounds now your putting them back in amateur fights almost and it's just not right. I think that it is pathetic and shouldnt be allowed if it happens to take place. Furthermore think about risk of injuries? how is that really smart to have a 4 round fight against 1 guy then again against another guy if you won but are all beat up going against someone who just won by a quick KO and isnt touched at all? It makes no sense and I disagree totally with this, if your going to have a tourney have a real tourney not 4 rounds numerous times in one night this is pro not amateur.

Yea I agree ith you somewhat, I dont know how this is gonna work, but however it works it would be exciting but dangerous at the same time

I concur 100%. The idea is circus-like in atmosphere. If their goal is to make boxing a sideshow attraction, this would be step one. There is no merit in such an event, IMO.
Didn't they have something like this down in Tupelo with Maurice Harris, Tony Tubbs, Bonecrusher Smith and a few others?

its entertainment. hell,,,how many times do fights get dull after the 4th or 5th round in the heavyweight division due to fatigue. hell,,I'd rather watch a 4 round fight where guys will let it all hang out than opposed to yawning through 12 rounds. granted,,,if these guys were world class elite fighters then it would be detrimental but these guys are not elite world class fighters imo so let it happen. peter is way too one dimensional and byrd is past his prime and coming off a beating
