Comments Thread For: A Redo For Andre Ward, Sergey Kovalev and Their Promoters

By Andreas Hale - Andre Ward didn't have to do it. But he did. After some back and forth with negotiations, Ward agreed to grant Sergey Kovalev a rematch that is set for June 17 in Las Vegas. This comes less than a year after their hotly contested showdown in November where Ward won a controversial decision...

Kovalev is already doing his part on social media, and the best part about it is every gripe he has is legitimate, even if I'm not really down with the religious jokes. Other than that, he is just speaking the truth, and righteous anger at the decision, which should hype the fight a lot.

We'll see if Ward does his part this time, or if it will just be more of the same.

This fight shouldn't have been a PPV fight. Boxing keep propping up these pretenders to be the next big thing but the problem is you can't fake these things. No matter how much trash talking Kovalev does the fans aren't buying it. This fight will do the same PPV buys as before and end up with the same result.

When you look at what some guys have gone through to get their names out there, it's no wonder. Neither ward, nor kovalev have a dela hoya, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Trinidad, etc to fight to gain more name recognition. Obviously it's a very significant fight for boxing itself, but the names, promotion, hype, all are just not there.

I loved the way they built up the first one. Classy, focusing on the merits and significance. But, I'm in the minority and most seem to want drama. So, they need to sell the drama this time. People will say Ward isn't doing his part but he already is to a great extent. There's a bit of Mayweather in the way that he's become the villain. Those who deny it are the ones that are screaming the loudest about how much they hate him so it's been effective thus far. What he's lacking is the braggadocio that really made Mayweather so polarizing. I just don't think that's Andre's style so he will likely never hit that super stardom but he's definitely been more vocal lately.

"Andre ward didn't have to do it. But he did." See,that's just plain wrong. The first fight had an rematch clause, which kovalev used. Ward was legally obligated to give him the rematch,or they would have met in court instead of the ring. A little research goes a long way.

Incorrect because Ward could have retired, vacated the belts and/or switched divisions. A rematch was not Ward's only option.
