Barrera, Morales, Marquez, and Duran had language barriers too...look at the heaps of money they earned. They didn't get there by being boring or safety first. Half the brawlers you mention on your list also suffer from the same language barriers you claim Lara and Rigo are a victim of, can't have it both ways.

Burley's problem was that he was a boring fighter. Robinson, Louis, Armstrong, Charles fought through the same race barriers as Burley, yet they made money by being great fighters who entertained the fans with a healthy balance of defense and offense.

For every Hopkins and Ward, there are ten fighters who earned as much and had fan-friendly styles. I'm not advocating for a Provodnikov that fights with his face, but lets have some balance and nuance that keeps fans interested and getting their money's worth while winning. That's what Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Tyson, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Mosley, and countless others have accomplished and still managed to give us GREAT fights.

Wlad got his share of KO's and wasn't always the clinching and grabbing snoozer that he is now. Hopkins is another snake-oil salesman. Selling an image and persona, and made his biggest money on the name of his opponents. His acting performance versus Jones in their rematch was disgraceful.

Every single one of the fighters you listed had a fight where they boxed smart and engaged less because they felt that was the best strategy necessary to get a win. Except for maybe Tyson who lost every time he stepped up in class and had to become a circus show outside of the ring to stay relevant.

Like I've been saying, winning comes first and entertaining becomes secondary. If you continue to win, your earnings will increase. If you entertain and accumulate L's, they will eventually lose interest in you.

Idiots and casuals think brawlers fight the way they do to please the fans and to make exciting fights. Thats what they want you to believe for marketing reasons, but in reality if they could box better they would. Two ex come forward Mexican brawlers Barrera and Chiquita started their career brawling and they were successful because of their power and chin would let them get away with a lot, but when they began to face higher skilled boxers. They no longer were successful so they adapted to be more skilled and for that they became stars. When Chiquita fought Carbajal. Chiquita got KTFO on their first fight by taking it to Carbajal straight ahead. So after Chiquita knew his power was inferior he decide up his boxing game and Chiquita then won the last two fights. Chiquita was considered one of the bada$$es Mexican mother f'er and even with such machismo in his blood he knew at the end of day skills pays the bills.

Idiots don't realize that uping your skill sets takes a lot of heart and dedication. Anyone can show up and fight their heart out, but very few have a heart and discipline to work all day everyday on your skills while those so called warriors are drinking the day after they got KTFO. When you have low skill you rely on your size and power.

Well he's making more because hes on home turf and he won the last fight. It's not because of his style. I can almost guarantee you if ward had a non boring and exciting style of fighting his purse would easily be two to three times or maybe more than what it is now.

But the biggest reason he's getting more because hes on home turf. Shoot just imagine if Kova was American, his purse would highly exceed Wards.

Winning sets the foundation for commercial success. No matter how "entertaining" you are, it really doesn't matter if you are not winning.

At the same time, if you are winning and not "entertaining" you need to have a schtick to draw further interest.

People clamored to see Tyson because of his knockouts, intimidating and unpredictable aura.

People came to see Floyd because of his elite skills and (post-ODLH) braggadocio.

There's no one way to succeed financially in the hurt business, but what seems to separate the haves vs the have nots, is a sense and/or opportunity to market themselves

They were all celebrities outside of the ring and had outgoing personalities. Ward disappears in between fights and is not liked by a lot of folks.

Although I will give him credit for making more of an effort more recently as he is getting into broadcasting on CSN and he appears on the broadcasts for the Golden State Warriors.
