Comments Thread For: Hagler Lost the Fight, But Made Much More Money Than Leonard

I remember my dad saying Ray would beat Hagler, because he sold himself short. He gave most of the advantages to Ray, he was more interested in making more money and he knows fighting Ray would be the answer to that. For Ray it was about getting that W at all cost.Comment

Marvin became an actor in Italy. I think hes done well for himself and stayed out of the spotlight.Comment

I'm not sure why Hagler is getting crap from some people. He stuck with his promoter. Other guys get crucified for "breaking their contracts." Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Now people are mad because he made more. Ridiculous and irrelevant, to be honest. I'm not sure why people care so much about these guys wallets as long as they make enough to take care of themselves and their families.Comment

Boxing is better with promoters. Top rank is the best. Factually and historically. TMT is not even making big moves. so **** being your own promoter, this is a machine, not a one man show. Floyd made the value of boxing go down after all the boring fights he did.Comment

I was hoping that Hagler won the fight, and I was a little salty about that. As I grew older, I gained respect for what Sugar Ray did, as he went up the ladder and was successful. But here's a lesson for those going up in weight classes: this is Ray's advice to Brook (which Brook ignored)
August 30, 2016:
"He also has to be in the best shape ever, capital E, to maintain the tempo and the pace of Golovkin.
"He has to be mobile, in and out, and try to confuse triple-G.
"He has to do what he does best and be himself, but faster, quicker, smarter, more economical."
And Leonard added that there are lessons Brook can learn from his 1987 Vegas clash with Hagler.
"To maintain the weight was quite difficult, I was kind of a natural welterweight," said Leonard.
"My weight would not go beyond 155 so it was very difficult trying to maintain 160.
"I was trying to figure out what weight I should be. As the fight got closer, I weighed in at 158, which didn't take away from my speed and didn't take away from my mobility.
"Brook has to understand what weight is he most comfortable at, what weight won't take away his speed or his movement.
"I kept moving, I could not stand toe-to-toe with Marvin Hagler. The times I did, was just to release my combinations, and then get back out.
"I could not be a stationary target because it wears you down against a bigger guy, a heavier opponent."
Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard says Kell Brook will have to be in the best shape of his life if he is to cause an upset and defeat Gennady Golovkin.
Just because you fight a bigger guy, doesn't mean you have to be the bigger guy! Props to Sugar!Comment
