I can't really blame Hagler. There was demand for the first fight for 4 or 5 years before it happened. Over the course of that time, Hagler was not the same Hagler. After that ridiculous 118-110 scoring and the delay with making the 2nd fight, he didn't want to play the game of chasing Leonard down anymore. It would have been great if the rematch would have happened, but sometimes, the BS isn't worth and you move on. I think this is one of those situations where the more personable and well-liked guy was able to shift the narrative favorably for himself.

Leonard waited forever to challenge then he waits over a year to negotiate a rematch contract!
Thats what happened and Hagler told him to fu@& off!

Ray Leonard in the ring was a super talent but Leonard outside the ring is an azzhole!
I met him when he was a young amateur boxer, then he trained at my gym for his 7th or 8th fight in New Haven, then years later when he retired and he was always an
egotistical bore. I'm not talking a strong ego that many fighters show he was more of a snob! Likeable as a kid but a snob none the less.

I had Hagler winner but Leonard's running and pot shooting made it close. Leonard ran like a girl.

I thought Marvin won the fight but I wasn't mad that a judge had it 115-113 for SRL. Marvin lost IMO because he took a 50/50 split in exchange for letting SRL's team control all the logistics. Marvin was always hung up on money after years of the boxing world making him fight for scraps.

The ring that night was huge and if it wasn't so big IMO Marvin would've had a better chance at winning the fight because he would've been better able to cut off the ring.

I always hated SRL. The BS fake fight announcement ceremony only deepend that hatred. I really hoped Marvin would put him in a coma but it didn't work out that way because SRL is a tremendous boxer.
That 118-110 card was the worst of all time. He has every right to be upset about that.

But SRL was a master of mind games and Hagler let him get in his head. From fighting Orthodox and giving away some of those early rounds to eventually retiring. Leonard didn't prove he was the better fighter, IMO, but he mentally mind ****ed Hagler which enabled him to win a decision and eventually force him into retirement.

If Hagler stayed composed, fought his fight and handled business like he had done his entire career I believe he would have been victorious in the first fight and could have done it again in the rematch.

can't blame him...when he wanted the rematch, he went as far as challlenging ray during a fight broadcast, to which ray reiterated he was retired...then when he announced that he was done chasing ray and hanging 'em up for good, here comes ray...bad enough ray had to be assured that hagler would be 2 steps slower then in his prime for the first fight...

anybody with some pride would tell him to shove it as well....even though hagler was listed as 32 years old, some accounts had him a little older, but hell he was close to 70 fights in, he had nothing to prove anyways....

i wonder if hagler, got a kick out of ray getting the living s**t kicked out of him by norris...lol

“I remember a year later at Caesars, they were having a big dinner......So I went over and I talked to Marvin. And I said, ‘Marvin, Ray asked me to come talk to you about doing the rematch.’ And Marvin looked at me with that scowl that he had. And he said, ‘Tell that guy to get a life.’ So that was it, man. We tried. We tried and there was no use to trying harder. Marvin was having no more of that.”

he waited a whole year before announcing his retirement.... but halger is the one that didnt want the rematch

He got in his head from the time he pulled the fake fight announcement BS.

Hagler was always EXTREMELY jealous of SRL , his image and his easier road to the top. He started out on TV and made a ****load of money while Hagler had to toil in obscurity for so long and never got the credit he felt he deserved.

I remember when they announced that score and I was throwing **** at the TV mad as ****. I was so pissed off! I was mad for like a week. LOL!

is it rays fault that Hagler cant cut off a ring? sounds like Pacquiao "if floyd stands still i can hit him" . ray skills were always levels above hagler he gave him a boxing lesson.

This is the second time i've seen you call Haggler a crybaby. I'll point out again that Leonard retired immediately after the first fight, while Haggler stuck around for a year chasing him for a rematch. Once Haggler finally decided to retire Leonard immediately came out of retirement. That offer by Leonard later on was purely mind games, Haggler was aware of this which is why he didn't bite.
