Comments Thread For: Hagler Eventually Wanted No Part of Rematch With Ray Leonard

"Sugar" Ray Leonard eventually was all in on a rematch with Marvin Hagler. Promoter Bob Arum and the legendary Leonard knew a second middleweight title fight against Hagler would've made even more money than their famed first fight at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The public demand was extremely high for Leonard-Hagler II in 1987 and 1988 because Leonard's split-decision victory over Hagler was so controversial.

I guess nobody told Hagler that Leonard was the "a-side doe" otherwise of course he would have immediately agreed......

He took his ball and ran home. Maybe for good reason but call a spade a spade.

Hagler is my favorite boxer ever. I always respected the way he walked away after that utterly preposterous 118-110 scorecard.

I thought Marvin won the fight but I wasn't mad that a judge had it 115-113 for SRL. Marvin lost IMO because he took a 50/50 split in exchange for letting SRL's team control all the logistics. Marvin was always hung up on money after years of the boxing world making him fight for scraps.

The ring that night was huge and if it wasn't so big IMO Marvin would've had a better chance at winning the fight because he would've been better able to cut off the ring.

I always hated SRL. The BS fake fight announcement ceremony only deepend that hatred. I really hoped Marvin would put him in a coma but it didn't work out that way because SRL is a tremendous boxer.

what a crybaby. retire and cry for all eternity about being "robbed" instead of setting the record straight in a rematch. arum should've gave him a pacifier.

Hagler made some silly decisions in that fight. Boxing orthodox early cost him that contest. When he was in Southpaw stance he dominated the rounds. I've scored it a few times with friends and he lost imo.

Too bad we never got the rematch. I believe he would've boxed southpaw the whole fight and got the W. But leonard was the master of playing promoter games. Just look at the Aaron Pryor situation years before.
