Why doesnt the jab do this more often?

        The jab is ALL about how you throw it. Some people were not taught correctly, trainers yelling to "throw the jab more" when their fighter is strategically throwing it wrong. You should either follow up with a combination or power shot after the jab, or move your feet a lot, laterally like floyd does. If you don't do one of those two things the jab can be a bad punch as it does no damage and can be countered easily.

        I think the jab should be thrown with more conviction.

        Among HWs Wlad & Holmes had the best jabs.. also Ali, Lennox, Foreman and even Vitali had good stiff jabs..
        A good jab keeps your opponent honest and puts him off his plan, so it's jab, jab, jab lead hand or hook.. rinse and repeat.. if a tall rangy guy uses his range and keeps distance and has good footwork then just these combos can win him rounds..

          This^^. It looked like he was starting to throw some half assed leaping left hook and hopped right into it. It was a case of perfect timing by cotto and clottey getting caught without either foot planted.
