Why doesnt the jab do this more often?

Is it because most boxers are not throwing it for power more for set ups point scoring, etc?

Or is it because that was a lucky well timed punch from a powerful guy?

Straight lead like mechanics that caused the knockdown?

Just knocked him over via off balancing because he was mid air when he got caught?

Because not every one walks into a jab all the time.. also some people don't have a stiff jab which is powerful enough to push your opponent..

Why do alot of boxers flick it almost like a backfist? More points scored with a faster punch?

        Cotto is a converted southpaw.

It's got to do with their basics.. Eastern Europeans mostly have a steady stiff jab and they work behind the jab and also it sets up their lead hand..
Mexican fighters hardly jab and throw looping hooks instead of straight shots..
What I have seen in flickers jab is its basically a mask shot i.e., they throw it to offput the guy or block his view when they change the range/angle..

In your gif though I see two things.. one the guy walked into the jab and was off balance when the quick jab landed.. and second cotto is a natural left handed iirc so he would have decent power behind a good straight jab..

Cotto is a converted southpaw. He is left handed and his left is his power hand. He has and extra hard left jab and left hook and an average right. Most boxers jab with their weaker hand. Kovalev is right handed and has scored knock downs with his ramrod left jab.Jabs very in power from boxer to boxer. It isn't thought of as a knockdown punch because you can't turn much body weight into it the way you can with a hook or a straight right for a right handed boxer or straight left for a left handed boxer.

Nowadays nobody knows how to throw a jab. And that one looked like a power jab

Some mexicans have good jabs like marquez and Canelo. But yeah eastern Euros have the best jabs. Kovalevs jab can put people down, he hammered ward with it alot, snapping his head back. GGG's jab against jacobs was money.

The jab is ALL about how you throw it. Some people were not taught correctly, trainers yelling to "throw the jab more" when their fighter is strategically throwing it wrong. You should either follow up with a combination or power shot after the jab, or move your feet a lot, laterally like floyd does. If you don't do one of those two things the jab can be a bad punch as it does no damage and can be countered easily.

I think the jab should be thrown with more conviction.
