Is It All About Seeing a Strong Fighter Crumble into Weakness?

Surely the allure of boxing stems from seeing strong fighters, but watching them fall has its own allure which I think may be more powerful with some fans. Obviously many want to see GGG fall although now as he did not look like a monster against Jacobs, that desire might have been met a little already.

The time when Chavez Sr. got dropped by Randal. Broner getting dropped by Maidana. Pac getting dropped by Marquez. Some truly get off on seeing the extraordinary look ordinary. Any thoughts?

I really hate seeing great fighters decline. I wish Pac would retire. Glad Floyd retired. Vitali and Calzaghe too.

Seeing Broner get beat was more about seeing someone get humbled and that's another thing entirely. Then, there's the failed cherry pick, which is what Happened to Haye.

That's true. Those are different. I was speaking mainly about when a great fighter looks ordinary and like you say, it is pretty sad usually.

Its sad what happened to Hopkins, I know a lot of people were happy that he lost to Smith in the way that he did, I wasn't. The guy is a legend and should have gone out with a win.

It was hard to watch Martinez when he fought Cotto. It was also pretty hard to watch how far Haye has fallen as a fighter. He should have retired immediately after the Bellew fight.

I reject the premise of this thread.

Real fans of the sport hope every fighter gets out when the time is right.

I have no problem with Froch doing as he did or Lewis or Floyd and I hope they and others stay retired.

But, if I humored you and gave credence to your theory, I still wouldn't put Lil g into this category.

What we wanted to see from Mr. 154-175=160 is a fighter who found a way to live up to his hype.

We wanted to see him go down to 154 and make himself a player there with a win over a good jr. middle.

We wanted to see him make it hard for Floyd to avoid him at 154.

We wanted to see him laugh at Canelo and 155, make that weight and beat him anyway.

We wanted to see him go up to 168 and fight a great super middle, maybe THE GREAT super middle, Ward.

He wouldn't even have to win, just have a great close debatable fight with another proven great fighter.

Turns out, the only close debatable fight he has had was against a fighter who we as unsure of as far as greatness as we are of Lil g.

There are a couple of threads here debating (or crying) about why Joe Calzaghe doesn't seem to get the respect some thinks he merits.

            This is why.

Joe doesn't get it because he never beat anyone worthwhile in anything near their prime.

And Triple L is flirting with an even worse fate.

Well he just beat Jacobs and seems to be lining up BJS and Canelo. If he beats both of them, that's the division and one very impressive year. What more do you want from the guy? I know he's been hyped to the gills, but that really isn't HIS fault. I think you have more of a problem with his worshippers than GGG himself.

                  You definitely get it.

You see clearly where I am with Lil g.

                  Search my posts about him.

You will see my problem with him is very much based on fanboys not seeing him accurately.

I can agree with anyone who says he passes the eye test for greatness.

But so did Jeff Lacy at some point. So did David Price at some point.

What has he done to prove it?

                  And with whom?

The hype IS partly his fault.

And not living up to it is ALL his fault.

So what Quillen didn't want him. So what he couldn't get quality fights at 160.

                  He is Mr. 154-175, right?

                  Lots of guys wanted him.

BHop did. Groves did. Dirrell did. Lara did. Canelo did (albeit at Caneloweight). DeGale did. Ward did. Ramirez did. And that's only a partial list.

There were a lot of challenges he could have took that would have had us getting him ready for Canastota RIGHT NOW instead of wondering whether or not he is even an elite fighter after coming off of 2 subpar performances in a row.

                  Nah, man.

                  That's HIS FAULT!
