Comments Thread For: Trainer: Gamboa, If He Stops Bad Habits, Can Beat Lomachenko

Veteran coach Ismael Salas is now training an army of fighters, like Jorge Linares, Rances Barthelemy, Nonito Donaire and several others. The one fighter he will not continue training is former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-1, 17 KOs). The two get a long on a personal level, but Salas does not want to work with Gamboa.

When he talks about bad habits, is he referring to Gamboa's arrests for domestic abuse?

He is just straight up bad habits, I have never seen a guy with his speed and pop have such bad defense and footwork.

He's faded. Sad to see but his movement, while still quick, was half a step behind what it used to be. The explosiveness is dwindling and you don't get that back. That's something that comes from youth. I hope he can do what a lot of great boxers have done, and find ways to work more intelligently and compensate for physical gifts that are declining.

This is a very telling statement from Salas. Who is turning his fighters into world champions.

Gamboa has so much pure and natural talent yet pisses it away due to not working on his craft.

Hopefully Gamboa realizes that he has another promoter backing him and who can get him another world title shot but he has to put the work in to get back to that level.

Just set him up to KO a couple of cans, then make the largest money possible vs loma or even saying f*kc it and getting Mikey G who just brought up the fight recently.

Gamboa wasted so much of his potential. Even when he was really good he would make many mental mistakes. Another part of his problem is all the muscles he carries on such a small frame. Even at his best Lomachenko would be a tough matchup because of his mental lapses.

Prime for prime, this would have been absolutely spectacular.

Now though, he's faded. Not quite as fast, inactive which has resulted in rust and a loss of stamina, years of not working with a real trainer and fighting in the wrong weight class...it's all added up to a diminished Gamboa.

At his best, he had the ability to beat anyone.
