Stayed over seas like a coward ducking all the tough fights then cherry picks great fighters when they old or washed up. Retires and all his fans left saying what if. That's why he is not respected and loved like Roy or Hopkins and many other fighters of his era. And perfect example that wins and losses can be overrated. He retired undefeated and nobody talks about him. LMAO Roy and hopkins right now have 17 losses combined but are both ranked higher all time over him and fans will be talking about their greatness forever while Calzaghe is just a foot note. Smoke and mirrors records <<< fighting the best. You might not win them all but you get respect and love. I got more respect for hatton who could of pulled a calzaghe but challenged himself against the best.

        just like all americans
I thought you wanted a debate, but obviously you don't.

You're either trolling or you're clueless.

Roy was exposed when he stepped up?

        Ha!

        Shut up.

Let me leave you with the following excerpt from Joe's autobiography, which was released the year BEFORE he fought Roy. Enjoy:

I have no interest anymore in Roy Jones and no interest in Antonio Tarver. Jones is washed up and Tarver was never that good anyway. He just caught Jones when Jones was shot and Johnson did the same"
IT WAS past three o'clock in the morning when Joe Calzaghe experienced the sweetest validation of his professional life. Victory over Jeff Lacy, a 28-year-old American compared to a young Mike Tyson because of his power and "take-no-prisoners attitude", left no one in doubt about the world super middleweight champion's talent. For years, Calzaghe's virtuosity remained a legend of the Welsh valleys. His defeat in 1997 of Chris Eubank brought him to prominence, winning for him the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super middleweight title. But despite a record number of defences of the belt, his career lacked a defining contest. A long line of challengers and ex-titleholders were disposed of but the biggest names in American boxing avoided the ultimate showdown he craved. Hand injuries further obscured the true level of his aptitude for an art he began to learn from his father, Enzo, at the age of eight when - inspired by Sugar Ray Leonard - a rolled-up carpet in the family home in Newbridge became a makeshift heavy bag. This is the story of Calzaghe's extraordinary life, from his humble beginnings in his hometown of Newbridge, to his ascent to personal greatness, becoming the first super middleweight boxer to win the prized belt awarded by The Ring, the bible of boxing, in the division's near 20-year history. One of Britain's foremost sporting champions, a warrior and working-class hero, this is the story of the triumphs and trials that made Calzaghe a legend.

When you don't have power, accuracy, or counter shots, how do you win?

Easy... just throw 1,000 punches a fight.

He had good timing in picking his foes. I give him Kessler and Lacy as his best wins because they were prime. But overall his resume is weak

He was around in a time when boxing in the uk didn't have much of a financial base so he was always going to be a "b side fighter" in any possible fight with Hopkins or Jones. But those guys never made much of an effort to get the fight.

is coming out was against Jeff Lacy, an American who was incredibly highly rated at the time. Although nowadays you will not find a single soul who says they ever rated Lacy, at the time he was hugely hyped by them on this site and others.

Calzaghe not only eat him, he humiliated him in a 12-0 beatdown that is one of the most one sided fights you will ever see. This would be the current equivilant of Brook schooling spence 12-0 with ease.

After this, of course americans said they always knew lacy was a joke, but that's a lie. Lacy also suffered basically a career ending shoulder injury toward the end of the fight so was never able to regain his past form.

The next fight was Hopkins. Again americans said he would have far too much for Calzaghe, but it was a pretty easy win considering the ref bias in that fight. Hopkins went on to perform at an elite level several years later which causes cognitive dissonance amongst the american fanbase.

Next was Roy Jones. Calzaghe schooled an admittedly old jones, and slapped him silly. Max Kellerman at ringside longed for the good old days when jones would school policemen and gas station attendents, "If only roy was in his prime."

Emmanuel Steward replied "this guy would have been an issue for roy at any stage"

                Kellerman fell silent

At the end of the fight max looked around for someone he could use to discredit joe, and pulled Chad Dawson out of his ass. Fail.

                Joe Calzaghe ATG.

                Deal wiv it.
There have been 20 viable brits to nuthug since joe, why do people have to ride him so hard? He retired, he was a serviceable champ, he isn't missed in the fight game. He was a slapper, shoe shined, and fought fighters once they were over the hill. This is not refutable. He beat a fresh young unproven jeff lacy true, he beat two shop worn fighters and that's about the extent of him

I think Calzaghe makes the grade... The case would be much easier to make if he were to have routinely come to America to fight about 6 or 7 years before the Lacy fight introduced Joe to the American Market...

Calzaghe was a beast for sure. It was a pleasure to watch him maestro his way around the ring in an offensive whirlwind, smacking the opponent to and fro. He would have humiliated Ward and bloodied Froch up until the ref stopped it on cuts.

Correct. But he wasn't interested. Instead of moving up to LHW and fighting in the U.S. he starved himself to make SMW, even though he knew Ottke wouldn't fight him to unify.
