Calzaghe is a legitimate ATG.
He was around in a time when boxing in the uk didn't have much of a financial base so he was always going to be a "b side fighter" in any possible fight with Hopkins or Jones. But those guys never made much of an effort to get the fight.
is coming out was against Jeff Lacy, an American who was incredibly highly rated at the time. Although nowadays you will not find a single soul who says they ever rated Lacy, at the time he was hugely hyped by them on this site and others.
Calzaghe not only eat him, he humiliated him in a 12-0 beatdown that is one of the most one sided fights you will ever see. This would be the current equivilant of Brook schooling spence 12-0 with ease.
After this, of course americans said they always knew lacy was a joke, but that's a lie. Lacy also suffered basically a career ending shoulder injury toward the end of the fight so was never able to regain his past form.
The next fight was Hopkins. Again americans said he would have far too much for Calzaghe, but it was a pretty easy win considering the ref bias in that fight. Hopkins went on to perform at an elite level several years later which causes cognitive dissonance amongst the american fanbase.
Next was Roy Jones. Calzaghe schooled an admittedly old jones, and slapped him silly. Max Kellerman at ringside longed for the good old days when jones would school policemen and gas station attendents, "If only roy was in his prime."
Emmanuel Steward replied "this guy would have been an issue for roy at any stage"
Kellerman fell silent
At the end of the fight max looked around for someone he could use to discredit joe, and pulled Chad Dawson out of his ass. Fail.
