Comments Thread For: Klitschko's Coach on GGG: Jacobs is Tougher Fight Than Canelo

Retired fighter Johnathon Banks, who is now the head trainer for former heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko, believes Daniel Jacobs is the toughest opponent Genandy Golovkin could face at this moment. He feels Jacobs will be a tougher opponent than Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Interesting comment at the end. Bound to engage a number of people here; "Jacobs is a solid 160lb’er and Canelo is not."

It is an interesting point but things may change when we finally see Canelo fight at 160lbs (or above).

There is a lot to that opinion in my view. It's why I'm not salivating for Alvarez Golovkin like some. Alvarez is short. There is nothing that projects him as a great or even above average middleweight. He would still be competitive in a weak middleweight division, but I'm just not projecting a lot from him at the weight.

Banks is a good coach out of the Manny Steward school. He knows what he's talking about.

                  This.

Alvarez fought junior mids at 155 for a reason, he loses all his natural attributes when moving up.

                    Agree.

Take the fight from yesterday for example.
Derevyanchenko was also short yesterday comparing to his opponent. Russell has significant reach and height advantage, also he was not much slower, so Sergey did not enjoy noticeable advantage in the reflexes department. It was not easy to negate his jab, and in addition Russell was a big middleweight with legitimate power. But if you have skills, this disadvantages can be negated, which was demonstrated. Even though Derevyanchenko is 10 fights prospect, while Canelo headlines the ranking, we never saw anything like that from Canelo. It still remains to be seen if he can work through significant physical disadvantage. And no, Chavez hardly qualifies as a test – slow and no punching power. The differences in reflexes will be apparent.
