If the plan is eventually to position Beterbiev as his own draw, GYM needed to get a gauge for what Beterbiev's business is looking like. Nothing wrong with getting that gauge now, especially with Beterbiev being so close to his own world title shot.

Headline this show in April, headline a show this summer, and then head into his title shot in the late Fall (after headlining his last two shows, one of which was on US TV).

    Can't stay on undercards forever.

I'm all for a better purse for a fighter if that is what your management/promoter guarantees you (like RocNation did for Kov vs Ward)..
If your own promoter throws you under the bus & you didn't even sign the contract but your promoter thinks you did, then ME & Team Barrera needs to sit down & discuss amongst themselves..

Although they turned down Ward & wanted 300K, turned down Kovalev for sometime in the future..
Can't blame Team Beterbiev in this case
Barrera didn't care who bid at the purse bid he was not fighting for 60k it's that simple. And if his own promoter won the bid that just means she has to pay the purse bid amount to Beterbiev and can always pay her own fighter more money. That's typically what happens in these bids anyway the winner just pays the bare minimum to the other fighter and whatever additional money they can make for the fight they pay their fighter.

I doubt if Duva won the bid Barrera walks away with only 45k. And yeah Barrera and Duva are not on the same page clearly with how this played out but I can't blame a fighter for turning down a fight that would only pay him 60k. Barrera has fought his last 4 fights on HBO, last 3 he headlined HBO fights. And he's 35 not some young prospect. 60k is simply too little for a fighter of his caliber.

Well in this case I'd say its Team Barrerra & Main Event's fault that did not keep the fighter's best interest in mind.. Like we both agreed, the promoter can pay $ outside of the purses that the bid dictates, it looks like Duva didn't even want to do that.. This could have been a good matchup, sad that it didn't materialize..

I got no problem blaming Main Events. Duva either didn't explain to Barrera or intentionally try to keep him in the dark on how little he was getting paid. Was not on the same page with their fighter so the way it unfolded was embarrassing. But I can't blame Barrera from walking from a HORRIBLE fight. Any manager worth a damn or who cares about their fighter would of told Barrera hell no pass on this garbage 60k purse. GYM went the cheap route and tried to get the fight made for nickels but hey that's their rights and they followed the purse bid.

But the outcry as if they don't understand the business is hypocritical for them. Refusing to go forward when they were in the same boat and passed on 500k for Kovalev.

Yes and no. It's more of the manager's job to negotiate and get you the most money possible.

It's been already discussed that Main Event does not care about anyone else but Kovalev and even with Kovalev they have ****ed him with paydays.

GYM offered way more than Main Events.

Now Barrera will be suspended and Beterbiev will get his title shot.

Seems to work out very well for Beterbiev. Barrera is an idiot.

That is not why he went straight to the purse bid. He went straight to the purse bid because of his previous dealings with Main Events. That's why he also requested an immediate purse bid for Kovalev-Stevenson. He's not going to play Duva's games

But the money was horrible. But that's what happens when you're signed to Main Events and your name isn't Kovalev.

Was Kovalev fighting for free, or even for 60k, after he got on HBO? Was Kovalev fighting for free once he became top 5 ranked by the sanctioning bodies? No he wasn't. Barrera has fought on HBO and he's ranked top 5 by the sanctioning bodies. But you want him to fight for free? You sound dumb and that's a ****** comparison. Don't quote me with your nonsense
