  • Comments Thread For: Bellew Says Only "Very Big" Opportunity Will Get Him To Fight

Tony Bellew admits only a huge opportunity will get him "out of bed" to fight again. In the aftermath of his eleventh round TKO victory over two-division champion David Haye, having stepped up to heavyweight for the bout at the O2 Arena, the Liverpool boxer raised the prospect of retirement.

Scouse to real talk translation: ''I'm way too scared to take on the likes of Usyk, Briedis and all those other monsters that I ought to be defending my WBC strap against. Instead, I'm going to yap my way into another circus event while at the same time talking about how real I am, etc. They don't call me Bellend for nothing, you know.''

He promised Haye a rematch, emphasizing that he is "a man of his word"...

You're a geriatric at 36 now? Jesus Christ.

Haye's timing was a little off early but I wouldn't say he's shot. Still looks fast and powerful and if he can stay injury-free I see him being involved in some big heavyweights fights over the next year or two. The division is more interesting with him involved.

As for Bellew, he should do what he promised he would do and offer Haye a rematch. Probably won't as he knows deep down his fortunes only turned when Haye's Achilles went.

              pretty much.

For all the **** that folks want to talk about fighters, most top-level fighters put themselves through a hard 8-week camp, 100 rounds of live sparring, and countless miles on the road, among other things, to get ready and prepared to fight. You add that you've also got to worry about making weight, and committing to keep on fighting takes some effort.

Tony Bellew has basically been able to achieve his every dream in boxing (world champion, headline fight on the grounds of his soccer team, etc), in addition to make a good amount of money for himself and his family to secure their future.

what reason is there to keep on fighting? Maybe for a shot at a heavyweight world title, but that's about it

Surely having the bigger piece of the pie in a Haye rematch is MASSIVE?

                  This is really well put.

I can't begrudge a guy for trying to make enough money so that he can walk away from the game in comfort - being a professional boxer is brutal in every sense of the word.

Add to that, the "allure" of titles isn't what it once was - and that's a by-product of the significant dilution of the value of straps these days. It's not wrong to call most of them trinkets - and accordingly, they don't have the pulling power that they used to.

Money talks, and good on Bellew. As long as he's relatively honest with himself and fans, what else can anyone ask for?

I'm all good with money fights. Unless it's Amir Khan looking for one - he's a twat.

The general consensus (from what I'm seeing on message boards) is a lot of people wouldn't watch a Haye rematch. I probably wouldn't, either. That injury Haye has...he'd never be the same fighter and has the potential to go bum again on him during a fight. That's a nasty one. They should set up a Parker fight or a rematch with Stevenson and call it a day (which I like Bellew as a fighter, but he loses both of those. Good payday while he's hot, though).
