Comments Thread For: Ray Leonard Feels Today's Boxers Too Fixated on Being Unbeaten

Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard believes today's fighters are too fixated on their undefeated records instead of facing the very best opponents. Leonard was ringside last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and applauded welterweight champions Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman for staking their undefeated records in the ring.

Yes and that is because of the public. Once you lose people turn their back on you. You loose fans and popularity and when you lose that you lose endorsements and money. Once you lose you suck. Period. You are washed up, over the heel, exposed, or you were just never really any good to begin with. Of course, they are scared to death of losing. And it's bull **** that we treat them like that

Completely right. I have seen fans leaving the arena even before the fight is over when their fighter is losing widely. It's partially the media too, they make you sound rubbish if you have a bad night and the so called current crop of fans are largely unrealistic. Everyone's a bum it seems.

The fighters have every right to feel that way because the fans turn in them when they take an L. There earnings decrease and it's difficult to get back to the top because of network and promotional beefs.

Hell yeah you get respect. Because sadly they don't have to do and what's even sadder is that hardly anyone does do it anymore. It has gotten so pathetic that with a number 1 and 2 it's pay-per-view. Crawford pistol, kolv ward, GGG Jacobs. So probs to both of those men for sexy and examples setting an example of how boxing should be

I think this is a bit overstated now. People still like Porter and will tune in. People will still tune in for Garcia. Haye still a big draw despite losing to Klitschko and five years out of the ring.

As long as you get yourself back into the mix. Losing to one guy doesn't mean the end because people will still be interested to see your style vs another top guy. Just make compelling matchups.
