The ability to go toe-to-toe.....is a real & true ability.
Ricardo Mayorga's two horrible beatings at the hands of Felix Trinidad & Oscar DeLaHoya prove this.
Mayorga is a strong, powerful wildman. Yet, when it came time to exchange with those two elites, he was completely obliterated by them.
Both of them showed that going toe-to-toe well, is more than just ferocity & raw power. Unlike Mayorga, both Oscar & Felix still maintain their defense while trading heavily, & beat lesser foes with well-conceived & well-placed punches/combos.
This ability comes from years of training, learning, & fighting.
A fake "purist" only sees boxing skill when a fighter seems to focus on hitting & not getting hit....while not looking to do the most damage.
The reason the average Joe would be hospitalized by a decent boxer won't be because the boxer would pick him apart, but because when the Joe stands & trades with the real boxer, he's entering a place in which he is completely outgunned.
