it depends what you mean. if you lined up all the fighters, there is quality in the sport, some real good fighters and some great matches could be made. Unfortunately matches between the world level fighters are all too rare, however looking pretty promising this year so far.

This isn't a great era, but it's not bad either.

Not great: Look at the HW division. Many eras were better than this one by miles. The greatest athletes in the world at that size no longer aspire to be boxers. Are there a few exceptions? Not really.

Not great:the profusion of belts, titles, promoters, and catch weight fights stop too many great match ups from happening soon enough and often enough.

Not bad: There are some exciting fighters and match ups at the lighter weights particularly. The WW division is stacked, really interesting. Though we SHOULD be seeing more match ups within this division without waiting forever.

MMA has shown itself to be a real competitor to boxing, and I think that the super-prominence of other sports (basketball and american football) have stolen away the greatest larger athletes, maybe for good.

Well yeah, there used to be so many more boxers licensed in New York City than there is in the ENTIRE WORLD today. Just think about that

Mike Silver wrote a good book about the decline of boxing

I would love to see a live fight of Dempsey, Armstrong, or Robinson.

              No doubt about it.

Last weekend a 4 division world champion fought. Who had this guy beaten to become a champion at 4 different weights? DeMarco? Malignaggi? Gavin Rees? Seriously who is his best win?

And this weekend the WBC heavyweight champion is defending his title in a fight he openly admits that his opponent is shit.

It's a weak era. It's what happens when boxers refuse to fight each other and dare to be great.

Yes it is. You've got too many divisions, too many belts and too many cold wars between promoters, preventing quality match-ups. There's too much obsession about fighters staying unbeaten, sacrificing a lot of good match-ups for BS showcase fights with fighters who have been showcased to death. Beyond all of this, you have trainers who don't know what they're doing. No one teaches inside fighting any more. There are some excellent fighters out there, but they'd be much more challenged and shine their greatness through a lot more in a tougher era. No doubt.
