copy and pasted from other post incase anyone is interested:
i actually recently completed a research study on whether the
race/ethnicity of an athlete affects how their performance is described by broadcasters
most of the previous research had shown blacks were more likley to be characterized as physically surperior for successful performance and blamed for their lack of mental acuity for unsuccesful performance- this was observed mainly in basketball and football
whites- were the characterized in opposite fashion to blacks
not much had been done in the way of hispanics in athletics
only research citiing socially constructed stereotypes of hispanics such as unintelligent and exhibiting "machismo traits"
i investigated professional boxing
undertook a content analysis of 6 hispanic v black fights and 3 his v his fights (the same 6 boxers from the hisp v black fights) all from the hbo network
word-for word descriptors were coded into a taxonomy which had 3 categories- physical dimension, mental dimension, machismo dimension for both crediting sucess and faulting a lack of for unsuccesful performance( for example the mental dimension consisted of: composure/concentration, commitment/hard work, experience, and adaptibility/strategy)
this was a qualitative analysis so no statistical measurements were done save percentages to find common themes- the sample size and method is not conducive to providing generalizations
these common themes and actual word-for word descriptors the announcers used were discussed in the results section to add the richness that defines qualitative studies
but i can tell you the most common theme i did observe was announcers- both black and white, associating succesful performance of hispanic boxers wiht the machismo dimension as opposed to the mental dimension
okay long post if any one wants to read it i could send it ot you somehow
