No these fights do not tarnish his legacy. Everyone should understand that RJJ is like a decade past being totally shot.

At his prime RJJ was the best of his generation - better than Money IMO. Its just that he did not have good boxing fundamentals -- he was dominant only because he was the best athlete boxing has ever seen. So he had a short prime, once he lost a half-step, he fell FAST.

So that's why I can say that in his short prime, RJJ was the best, better than Money at his top -- whereas dudes like Money, Bhop, Finito had better careers because they had much better fundamentals once they lost that half step. Hell, BHop lost two or three full steps and was still on top of the game.

So no, these fights wont hurt his legacy, but they will hurt the amount of brain cells however.

Getting KO'd almost every fight in his forties will only spell disaster eventually.......It ended embarrassingly for Bhop, and I think it will end in a very sad worse fashion for Roy.

To judge his legacy as an actor, you wouldn't look at the crap he makes now.

To judge a boxer's legacy, you look at his prime, hopefully he has a bunch of good fights, as RJJ does.

You don't judge a boxer's legacy once he enters the stumble-bum stage of his career.

Did Roy not watch that last Hopkins fight?

I understand he is a warrior and his brain is hardwired a certain way. But this is a young man's game and it's a deluded pursuit for him to keep grinding on.

Not even to mention he's proven to be considerably less durable than Bernard was into his 40's.

Roy is a great commentator, but he's going to lose the faculties he needs to do that as well as he does if he gets his brain split another time or two.

I don't like this statement. At this point, never mind his career, the man's health is at stake! At what point will he not be able to "do it anymore"? After he suffers irreversible brain damage, or if he dies in the ring? The article stated that he's not getting paid much for these fights, so it can't be for the money. He needs to stick to commentating & maybe get into training or the business side of the sport. Stay out of the ring Roy, before they carry you out.

But his brain is another matter. I mean, just look at all the boxers slurring. Jones should understand that he is a much better commentator than a boxer at this stage (and makes more $$ that way). If he starts slurring, there goes his commentating gig.

Same goes for Traver & Paulie Mags for that matter. IMO, all 3 are good commentators. Its funny, I didn't care for any of their boxing styles (I respected Jones' talent, but didn't like watching his potshotting style). But all three are excellent commentators.

Roy was never the best boxer. He was the best athlete to ever box. As soon as he lost a step he became average overnight.

Roy was a lot more than just a freak athlete. He was a very good boxer, it was just based around his athletic ability. There are plenty of great athletes, there are not plenty of Roy's.

The weight drop from heavyweight back to light heavyweight took everything from him. He lost his speed, power, reflexes, punch resistance...it wasn't losing a step that made him average, it was taking off 30+lbs (not fat) so quickly.

RJJ has to pay the bills, hes broke. HBO is paying him like 100K a year to be a commentator, that is barely above middleclass IRL terms so he just trying to make as much money as he can before he cant or that lane of monetzation dries up for him (his boxing).
