Maybe he should not have fought Berchelt. They're going to turn him into the next Povodnikov or alvarado.

the ref and the cornermen are to blame for letting that beating go on.
his management are to blame chiefly for his matchmaking. they need to learn to tell GBP "no." management should be trusted with keeping a fighter's best interest at heart. those guys let vargas down. too many wars came one after the other.
i understand that a guy like vargas is in danger of a loss if he fights somebody who is negative and won't let him come forward and get going, but FFS the guy was in several FOTY type fights within the span of a year and change.
and that ref needs to be looked at and possibly suspended indefinitely or fined. at the very least he should be interviewed to see what the heck he was thinking, to make sure there was no foul play, and given some serious training. then it's back to the minor leagues, and maybe for good. that guy has no business determining when a fighter has had enough. roy jones was ready to get into the ring and throw three hooks at once at that ref.Comment

Chavez needs to shut up. This man has KILLED fighters for not taking tough fights. Saying they are cherry picking and not being a warrior. And then when they take tough fights he kills their teams around them after they lose saying why you put him in a tough fight? SMH Vargas is a fighter who because of his fighting style and just bad facial features that mean he cuts easy he will always be in bloody hard fights. If you don't put him in with someone who likes to brawl he will be OUTBOXED and lose and might get bloody in that type of fight as well. Lastly by all accounts Vargas is the one who wanted this fight. He didn't want a soft touch, it was likely this fight or a direct rematch with Miura/Salido which would of been just as brutal maybe worse.Comment

Funny how HBO, Lampley and certain writers praise fighters for taking part in "fight of the year fights' and **** on other boxers who don't. Yet those type of boxers don't stick around that long and end up struggling to get decent paydays after all them beat downs. HBO loves putting on those type of fights because they know that they are under paying the fighters for those type of wars and HBO would not have agreed to put on Vargas if he was taking on a soft touch.Comment

To be fair, Vargas pretty much has no choice who he ends up fighting if he wants to be on HBO. HBO wants these types of fights, especially when they are paying Salido,Vargas, Miura, Berchelt so little money. HBO would never put them on if they were going to take an easy fight. They reserve the mismatches and big pay days for the likes of Crawford, GGG, Ward, Kovalev , Canelo and Loma.Chavez needs to shut up. This man has KILLED fighters for not taking tough fights. The problem is the Vargas team WANTED a HBO fight. HBO was only willing to give Vargas a headline card if he was in with a top fighter. Golden Boy was on record after Salido fight saying they want to give him a long rest to heal and then a easier fight. If they did that it would NOT of been on HBO and would of been for less money. Vargas wanted this fight and the HBO spotlight. People need to stop blaming everyone else for decisions fighters make. Not Golden Boy's fault Vargas cuts easy and only brawls with zero defense. He could of easily had tune up or 2 just like Golden Boy got Lemieux after his GGG loss. Lemieux and his team were ok fighting in Canada or fighting on a undercard which were NOT fights HBO would air or give a headline too because these were fights against weak competition. Now after a few tuneups Lemieux has a dangerous fight against Stevens to get back on HBO. The tough fight coming off Salido fight was on Vargas because he wanted the HBO main event not Golden Boy's fault. He picked that rather then a few tuneups.I agree with Chavez Sr. I know that it's unpopular but there's no reason why Vargas should have fought Berchelt next. After Miura and Salido he deserved a B- or C-plus fighter.
I'm not sure there's but a tougher 3 fights in a row as Vargas just took. This reminded me of Matthysee all over again even though Postol was for the vacant championship.
Linares fought and unknown fighter in his home country Vargas should have gotten a step up from that.
Promoters got to look out for fighters moreComment

EXACTLY. Vargas was given 2 options take a easy fight but it will be on an undercard or a main event for a small venue R!ngTV type event. Or fight a tough fight on HBO and even then Golden Boy tried to get him on paper the easier of the tough fight options. HBO would of much rather had Vargas vs Saldio 2 or Vargas vs Miura 2. Vargas made the choice to go into a tough fight when Golden Boy made it clear last year they wanted him to have a safe fight return he chose otherwise to fight on HBO.To be fair, Vargas pretty much has no choice who he ends up fighting if he wants to be on HBO. Everyone knows how I feel been saying this for years.....
Vargas was poorly protected and although they're fighters you have to look out for the athletes help period. The stitching over his eye was poorly done and an obvious rush job. Hopefully he'll get a reputable plastic surgeon this time. Vargas please take off and don't come back for at least 12 month and then fight a C, B, A fighter in that order and you can have a long career still. Use hyperbaric chamber, work with a neuroligist and cryo-therapy going forward before entering the ring again. No sparring for 8 months at least. You can start working out again 4 months down the line but it's important to let body naturally mend itself, you've earned it and it's essential you do this if you want a career and health going forward.Comment

Excellent points as usual PBP.I've been saying this for a while. HBO exploits the **** out of these so called "action" fighters. They don't make nearly the amount of money as the top fighters in the game, take a ton of punishment and get recycled over and over again. It makes for good tv on a low budget.Comment
