Comments Thread For: WBA, WBC May Establish a Single Mandatory To Unified Champs

There could be some major shifts taking place with two of the major sanctioning bodies. Gilberto Jess Mendoza, president of the World Boxing Association and Mauricio Sulaimn, president of the World Boxing Council, came together and held important meetings in Mexico and Las Vegas, where several important ideas have emerged.

go for boxers who cant play the A side card, but are dangerous..get themselves in position and all of a sudden may unify a division in one fight...cool

guys like rances barthelemy, beterbiev, fortuna, walters, and many more...

wbc and wba get a pat on the back from me

now if we could just keep champions of other bodies in the rankings we could have a good thing going

WBC and WBA are already on board so it will happen with or without the others.

its pointless to rank other champions. No unification would ever get made because of somebody being ranked here or there. If the WBC champ doesnt want to fight the WBO champ, the WBO ranking him isnt going to change anything. Did Kovalev-Stevenson get made? Did GGG-Canelo get made? Unifications can either get made, or they cant, but ratings wont change anything.

That being said, I LOVE the idea of a common mandatory challenger. Take GGG for example. Lets say he had an IBF mando due with Tureano Johnson, and a WBC mando due with Heiland. Instead of fighting 2 garbage mandos, or potentially losing a title because the mando didnt get done in time, let Johnson and Heiland fight each other, and the winner gets the mando shot.

If the IBF and WBO can get on board with this, it would be MUCH easier for champs not only to unify the titles, but to be able to actually keep them....

Reading the headline I thought they (WBA and WBC) were going to make the respective champion of the other body the automatic #1 contender to unify the WBA and WBC - obviously that was a bit too pie in the sky. However, if they held that kind of policy, where in a champion of the other body was defaulted to #1 contender status with a mandatory status, they could effectively run IBF and WBO right out of the scene due to irrelevance.

The first two bodies to develop that kind of trust between them will end up owning the landscape. If a champion vacates due to moving up a weight class or retires, they still can brand two unique champions, but their first defense must be against the other champion - what a golden age of modern boxing that would create.

just bc kovalev ducked dont mean that other will..ggg was in line and he got the title..so it's not pointless at all..some ppl will be cowards regardless of the situation..good to weed them out..

i'll take unifications anyways that i can get them

Weren't they talking about this 2 or 3 years ago? Wasn't the WBA talking about only having 1 title like 1-2 years ago too? F#ck these alphabet groups & their bs.
