There's a ton of stuff over the years you can google about this if you wanna go down that rabbithole cuz I won't do it justice in breaking it all down, but from the most recent & ongoing bs about UFC contracts look no further then the guy who was at one time in Conor's shoes as the biggest draw in the UFC, Georges St. Pierre.
St-Pierre's lawyer, James Quinn of New York firm Weil, Gotshal and Manges, told MMA Fighting on Wednesday that he was "blown away" by the language he discovered in St-Pierre's deal.
"I've done a lot of work in sports. When I read that contract, I was blown away by how restrictive it is," Quinn said.
"They're basically tying him up for life. They have no rights and they own all of his licensing and all the other things. It's unheard of in the other professional sports. And they won't get away with it forever."
Quinn, an attorney who has successfully led cases against the NBA, NFL and numerous other major en****** in the past, compared the terms in St-Pierre's UFC contract to "something out of the 1940s." He said he hasn't seen language that restrictive in a sporting contract in 30 years, and that all past examples of similar deals have been found to be illegal once placed under the scrutiny of the law. He also cited the ongoing antitrust lawsuit currently being waged against the UFC by several former fighters.
"You couldn't get away with any old contract in any of the other sports," Quinn said. "There is litigation in that aspect of a class-action lawsuit that challenges the contract as being illegal under the NHS laws. That case is ongoing, and I think that under the law's terms, I don't think the contract -- that formal contract -- is likely to stand up. Not in today's world. It's a pretty nice form of slavery."
You know the way Conor has set up this McGregor promotions, has he really set it up?
Because isn't their something that with it being a promotion company, the money gets paid into the company, so technically McGregor himself is not getting paid,it's the company, isn't that why boxers set these company's up? Less tax and all that ****.?
So wouldn't that get him out of his contract as he technically wouldn't be getting paid,or can't be sued either, it will have to be the ufc suing McGregor promotions wouldn't it?
Which I'm sure 2 "boxing promotions" holding a boxing fight isn't illegal?
If that makes any sense haha
Yes, fighters/people generally set up LLCs/promotional companies to offset their tax obligations (LLCs are taxed at, I believe, 25% federally, with expenses by the company, ie camp expenses, allowed to offset the revenues going into the LLC, lowering the tax burden).
Yea a lot of business people, not just boxers, setup a company to lessen taxes & for other reasons that benefit them. I'd suspect McGregor is already smart enough to be doing that cuz taxes are a mfer when you are in that highest tax bracket in a career that could end on any given night & your pay can drastically change on a fight by fight basis, but idk all the particulars about Ireland either with this sorta thing so who knows.
I'm sure McGregor Promotions isn't much of anything at the moment. They probably don't even got a phone number outside of the touch butt guys' cell phone. They definitely don't got a website or FB page even, cuz I just checked, which are among the first things a business should be doing these days so that says everything to me. Apparently he has applied for a trademark for McGregor Promotions last month doe.
The Irish tax system is a touch different, though, one would think
